1. MOUNT PLEASANT PRIMARY SCHOOL SUMMER 2 YEAR 3 MATHS The children will be developing their understanding of measures and data handling. They will be interpreting a wider range of charts and graphs and representing their own data. We will also look at simple fractions: 1/3, 1/5, 1/10 of shapes and amounts. We will also be looking at division with remainders e.g.27 divided by 5. We will continue to develop written calculation methods and consider when we should use those methods to solve problems. YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD BY – Knowing their times tables and related division facts. Ask them to show you the written methods they have been practising in school. SCIENCE Rocks and Soils: we will consider; Which rock is the pyramids made from? What would be the best rock to make a sphinx statue from? Why? Which is the best soil for the Egyptian farmers to grow their crops? Through this unit we will come to recognise that underneath all surfaces is rock which we may not be able to see, that rocks get broken down into pebbles and soils which we can often see, and that there are different sorts of rock with different characteristics. We will look at pebbles and soils from different rocks to see if they have different characteristics. We will undertake experimental and investigative work focusing on: considering whether a test is fair measuring volumes of liquids using appropriate apparatus making comparisons drawing and suggesting explanations for conclusions. Children will be able to use their understanding of science to explain observations about rocks and soils, and to collect evidence to test ideas, as well as recognising hazards and risks. ENGLISH We will be reading ‘The Killer Cat’ by Anne Fine. The children will be writing playscripts, letters to an agony aunt, non chronological report, character description and exploring how dialogue is used in text.,They will also be exploring the thoughts and feelings of characters through role play and discussion so that they can empathise with the viewpoints of different characters. YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD BY: Reading 20 minutes every day with your child. Encouraging them to retell the story to you. Asking your child to write sentences about the story. HISTORY We are learning about the Anglo-Saxons. We will be talking about who the Anglo-Saxons were, where they came from and why they invaded Britain. We will be studying their lives, weapons, famous people from history, alphabet and the legacy they have left in Britain today. YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD B Y: Researching the Anglo-Saxons on the Internet. Encouraging your child to borrow books from the library about the Anglo-Saxons. HOMEWORK Year 3 homework will be set and handed out on Fridays. The type of homework given is English, Maths and spellings. It needs to be completed and handed in by the following Wednesday. PE- Outdoor: Monday and Indoor: Wednesday. VIOLINS- Tuesday morning. REMAINDER- Can you please make sure that your child is dressed in the correct school uniform and suitable black shoes. Jewellery not to be worn however girls can wear studs. Any jewellery that is worn due to religious observances is allowed. EDUCATIONAL VISIT A visitor from St John’s Ambulance, Mrs Raine Sutcliffe, will be coming into school to demonstrate a variety of first Aid techniques. Children along with their parents will be provided with the opportunity to know how to deal with a variety of situations and accidents in the home. The Parent workshop will take place- Wednesday 11 th June 2014 (afternoon) ART/ DESIGN TECHNOLOGY We are designing and making our own Bayeux Tapestry. We will be thinking about the different images to depict a story and what materials and techniques were needed to create our own. We will plan and design our pictures and then transfer these onto fabric. After choosing our mediums to add detail to our designs. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Beliefs through actions - Islam & Christianity We will consider how Christians and Muslims show their belief through prayer. We will do this by exploring the relationship between religion and prayers and the personal and spiritual responses that develop as a result. We will think about a sense of spirituality, (moving from feelings to spirituality) and how it is developed as we explore them. We will end the unit by having a deeper understanding of the importance of worship. YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD BY: Talking about your own and other people’s religions. Talking about the similarities and differences between different faiths. ICT Creating a database of different rocks and their properties. The children will learn to collect and store information involving more than two variables. They will use a database to answer simple questions by sorting and finding the top or bottom and searching in a single field. Children will be introduced to files, records and fields by exploring and comparing computer-based data and paper-based information. They will use a computer database, add to it, carry out simple searches and produce bar charts. Children will apply what they have learnt in this unit when using ICT to handle and present information in geography, science, design and technology, and history. PSHCE We are studying the topic changes. We will look at anticipating and coping with changes and transition. We will tackle the issue of change and aim to equip children with an understanding of different types of change, positive and negative, and common human responses to it. We will seek to develop children’s ability to understand and manage the feelings associated with change. And aim to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in three key social and emotional aspects of learning: motivation, social skills and managing YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD BY: Talking about their own goals in life and what they would like to achieve. Talking about how we can support other people achieve their goals. MFL Children will learn French. This half term they will be concentrating on naming days and months. They will learn letter strings, Performing action songs in French. Children will learn to write these words appropriately. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Tennis: We will develop a range and quality of skills when playing games using rackets. We will also learn specific tactics and skills for short tennis. In all games activities, children have to think about how they use skills, strategies and tactics to outwit the opposition. Athletics :The children will explore running, jumping and throwing activities, and take part in simple challenges and competitions. They will experiment with different ways of travelling, throwing and jumping, increasing their awareness of speed and distance. During athletic activities, children think about how to achieve the greatest possible speed, height, distance or accuracy. We will use these skills during the end of year sports day.
