2 Tuberculosis – a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis Transmitted via respiratory route Organism appears in water droplets expelled during coughing & sneezing or talking. Mainly affects lungs but can spread through blood stream and lymphatic system to brain, bones, eyes & skin. Drugs used to treat tuberculosis are called as antitubercular drugs.

3 CLASSIFICATION First Line agents - effective bacterial agents,with acceptable degree of toxicity Eg:Isoniazid,Ethambutol,Rifampicin,Streptomycin,PyrazinamideRifabutin Second Line agents -for microbial resistance or patient related factors Eg: Ethionamide, Amino salicylic acid, Cycloserine,Amikacin,Capreomycin

4 FIRST LINE AGENTS ISONIAZID (INH) CONH NH2 N 4-Pyridinecarboxyilic acid hydrazide
