4 To know the basics of predicting and preventing (Grade C) Task 1: what changes might there be before a volcano / earthquake? What could we monitor? How could the changes be identified or recorded? Task 2: if we have no option but to live in a tectonic zone how could we limit the damage from an earthquake at work or home and how could we defend ourselves from a volcanic eruption?

5 To be able to develop the basics into those appropriate for volcano / earthquake and to categorise preventions into Education / Building Design / Defence. (Grade B) Despite sophisticated monitoring equipment it remains very difficult to pinpoint exactly when a volcanic eruption or an earthquake will occur. Education focusses around: 1) design the rules for a monthly Earthquake Drill in a Japanese School. 2) Planning ahead: what could we check for in the home? What could we identify? What would be our communication plan? 3) what things could we teach to have in your Disaster Kit? DICES Building Design: How could we modify a building in order to prevent the effects of 1) shockwaves through the ground 2) tall buildings toppling over 3) glass windows breaking 4) tall buildings swaying. Defences: How could we disrupt a lava flow? How could we deflect a lava flow? How could we stop a lava flow?

6 To be able to develop the basics into those appropriate for volcano / earthquake and to categorise preventions into Education / Building Design / Defence. (Grade B) There are three main ways in which to prevent (limit) the effects of a volcano or earthquake. 7 To be able to increase depth with a range of specific examples(Grade A-A*) For each different type of prediction and prevention you should research on the web and use page 120-122 to link them to a range of specific examples. Also annotate the diagram on page 121.
