Welcome For the following activities you will need to: Work in pairs or threes Log into the workshop Learnline Unit using a generic account Unit title: Do you control the Grade Centre in Learnline or does it control you? 4

Before Semester 5 For this session all assessments have been created in the unit and that any submission points created in Learnline are auto-populated in the Grade Centre and any other assessment tasks have manual columns added

But does the Grade Centre match the Assessment Outline??? 6 ASSESSMENT DUE DATETOTAL MARKPERCENTAGE Assessment 1Celebrity Quiz14/04/20157010% Assessment 2 Paparazzi Assignment Safe Assign 16/04/20158325% Assessment 3 Case Study Students answer THREE (3) of THREE (3) Case Studies and receive best TWO (2) marks for Assessment 6 mark 25/05/201513025% Assessment 4 Question Types in Blackboard Quiz 01/06/201516010% Assessment 5 Prac Reports Student complete prac reports and submit after Prac lesson 31/05/201524030% TOTAL683100%

Activity [10min] 7 For this activity: Go through your Grade Centre as a pair and align columns to Assessment Outline You will need to consider the order of columns, deleting unnecessary columns and who needs to see which columns (lecturer or student or both?) You will also need to consider what the student will see and how this will impact their interpretation of their results.

Best Practice 8 Due dates Titling of columns Should I delete or hide unnecessary columns? Grade format (Primary Display)

Calculated Columns 9 For this activity consider: What are calculated columns? What is the difference between Totals and Weighted? When would you use them? How can you create one? Running totals Activity [10min] Go through and create a weighted column based off the assessment outline and delete any unnecessary columns if applicable. For the purpose of this activity only use two case study columns at 12.5% each and weight each Prac Report as 5%

What is the Green Tick? 10 Where is the green tick? What is the green tick? What does it do? Where should it be? How can it be moved? Activity [5min]

Decimal Points and Rounding 11 Grade Centre now has a new facility which allows marks to be entered to two decimal places. Things to remember if using decimals: Keep to hundredth If using to third or fourth decimal Grade Centre will round to the nearest two decimal places

Multiple Assessments (best 2 out of 3) 12 At the moment our Case Study Assessments for Assessment 6 is confusing and not totalling correctly because The three scores are in different formats, and The total is averaging all three case studies instead of the two highest scores The percentage shown is the average from all three case study results whereas it should be the average from the best two scores (81.48%) Activity [5min] : What can we do? Assessment 3Case Study Students choose ONE (1) of three (3) case studies to base assignment on 25/05/201513025%

Ongoing Multiple Assessments 13 Another option for a multiple assessment is an ongoing assessment like the Assessment 5: Prac Reports

Ongoing Multiple Assessments continued 14 To remember: The title of your weighted column makes sense in context and for students (if it is available to them) Is the total included in the Grade Centre calculations? If the calculated column is included in Grade Centre calculations or have you removed the individual assessments from the Grade Centre calculations?

Smart Views 15 What are Smart Views??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkT0hXRDWPc&list=PLontYaReEU1tzu1T5gfiX-JQA5nBc3isN&index=48 http://help.blackboard.com/en-us/Learn/9.1_2014_04/Instructor/120_Grade_Center/010_Customize_Grade_Center/050_Smart_Views

Smart Views 16 Using the example of Assessment 5 and the six required Prac Reports Activity [10min] : Create your own smart view. Consider why using a smart view may help your organisation.

Non assessed activities?? 17

Colour Coding 18 https://help.blackboard.com/en-us/Learn/9.1_2014_04/Instructor/120_Grade_Center/010_Customize_Grade_Center/070_Color_Code_the_Grade_Center Activity [5min] : Colour code your test Grade Centre

Grading Schema 19 https://help.blackboard.com/en-us/Learn/9.1_2014_04/Instructor/120_Grade_Center/010_Customize_Grade_Center/030_Grading_Schemas

End of Semester 20 Downloading Grade Centre results for your records Why is Grade Centre different from Callista? Activity [5min] : Download the results from your test unit

Final thoughts on grades… 21 “But there are advantages to being elected President. The day after I was elected, I had my high school grades classified Top Secret” (Ronald Reagan) “Good grades, enough sleep, a social life… you can only pick two.” (Anonymous) “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” (Albert Einstein) Learnline Staff Support Learnline Development & Training OFFICE OF LEARNING AND TEACHING T.
