2 Pre-Test How many credits do you need to graduate from high school in Irvine? How many points does a “B” grade get you towards your GPA? How many years of math does it take to graduate from high school? How many years of math does it take to apply to a Cal State or UC school? What year will you first take the CAHSEE? Do all grades appear on your transcript, even if you repeat it for a better grade?

3 High School Registration Timeline March/April – 8 th grade teachers make recommendations for high school placements. Parent Night Wednesday, April 15 – UHS & NHS Wednesday, April 22 – IHS & WHS Friday, May 14 th – WHS counselors register students at PV from 8- 10 AM End of April – IHS, UHS and NHS students go to high school to register Summer School Registration – Mid April – Early May

5 High School Transcripts Student’s high school academic record Contains student information, courses, grades, credits, GPA (weighted/non weighted, academic classes), CAHSEE results Once you earn a grade in HS, it is always on your HS transcript! Community Service – 25 hours in one school year = community service commendation on transcript. Four community service commendations are possible during high school. Community service is not required, but highly encouraged. Advisors vs. Counselors

6 High School Graduation Requirements Pass all required courses (including Algebra 1) Students must complete a total of 215 credits Pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)

7 Honors / AP Courses The major difference between Honors and AP is all AP courses have a weighted GPA and are taught at a fast pace rigorous college level. There are Honors classes that give extra points towards GPA. There is an AP exam at the end of each AP course. Honors and AP Courses (A, B, C) are weighted in 11 th and 12 th grade; some honors courses are weighted in 9 th and 10 th. Honors is accelerated High school class, AP is college level class taught at a high school. If I’m recommended for honors level classes, do I have to take those classes?

10 CAHSEE California High School Exit Exam Exam all CA public school students need to pass to receive their high school diploma. English – Language Arts includes reading and writing Mathematics – includes content through Algebra 1 Given in March of 10 th grade, can retake in grades 11+ On transcript: Passed or Requirement Not Met

11 Small Group Discussion What is the grade level of this student? (9 th,10 th, 11 th, or 12 th grade?) How many credits are earned for each passed high school semester course? Find the ‘Credit Summary” section. How many credits are required and how many are completed? Find the ‘GPA’ section. What is the difference between weighted and non-weighted GPA? Academic and non-academic? Find the ‘CAHSEE’ section. Has this student passed the CAHSEE?

16 Sports Eligibility SUMMARY OF CIF/IUSD ELIGIBILITY RULES FOR ATHLETICS & ACTIVITIES ACCORDING TO BOARD OF EDUCATION POLICY #6145(A) In order to be eligible, a student must: 1. Be currently enrolled in a minimum of 25 units of course work. 2. Have passed a minimum of 20 units of course work from the previous Quarter. (Only 5 units from the student's sport/activity and physical education classes can be used towards the counting of the 20 units) 3. Have a GPA of 2.0 or higher from the previous quarter. PROBATION: A student is allowed a one-time, one-quarter probation period that they may use once during their 4 years of eligibility in High School when the student's GPA falls below the 2.0 minimum. Students who have not passed a minimum of 20 units from the previous quarter are ineligible. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE INELIGIBLE? When ineligible, a student may not participate in the extra-curricular activity in question. Athletes, class representatives, pep squad, color guard, ASB members, etc. may not participate in rallies or any other school activity outside of the classroom. Students must still attend class and/or practices and meetings and do any/all required assignments in order to receive credit. When in doubt, the coach/advisor must see the Assistant Principal in charge of Athletic Eligibility for clarification. Eligibility requirements apply to the following students: All Athletes, Pep Squad, Color Guard, Marching Band, ASB & Class Officers, Tech Staff & Drama Productions
