PRACTICE 1 Read the following text in a silent way. THE SILICON CHIP We are at the start of a third industrial revolution, and the protagonist of this revolution is the silicon chip. We find silicon chips in many products, but perhaps the computer is the most obvious example. Computers are rapidly changing the world we live in and the way we live. They are creating new jobs and making old jobs unnecessary: offices, banks, farms and factories are all very different from 20 years ago, and the people who work in them have very different jobs. Doctors and scientists use computers to discover more about our bodies and the world around us. Space exploration, genetic engineering, optical fiber technology, scanners, lasers, telecommunications, and many more areas all depend on computers.

JAIME A. JURADO N. - 2010 PRACTICE 2: 1.Read the following text in a silent way. 2.By using the word processor – WORD – develop the WORKSHOP. COMPUTERS The processes which were used to be carried out by people operating machines are now carried out by computers. Computers are used in car factories to control the operations of production lines, and many cars are built almost entirely by computer-operated robots. In telephone exchanges, powerful mainframes are used to direct calls which would formerly have been connected by a human operator. In airlines, reservations are made, flights are scheduled and cargos are loaded by computers. Banks rely on electronic data processing, and in pharmaceutical companies, the functions of filling containers, sealing bottles and many other processes are controlled by computers. Even in small shops, small microcomputers are being installed to assist in inventories, stocktaking, sales records and accountancy. SALIR
