Lane CSEE Faculty Meeting October 14, 2009 Agenda: ABET Thank You ABET Results ABET Followup

ABET Thank You’s Chris Randall –Coordinated collection and organization of assessment and display materials and so much more!!! Please thank him personally Afzel Noore –primary author of CpE self-study, Chair of CpE Area, and reviewed other self-self studies Cindy Tanner –Primary author of CS self-study, oversaw assembly, organization and collection of CS assessment and display materials Muhammad Choudhry –Lead author of EE self-study, Chair of EE area Ramana Reddy –Chair of CS area, Senior design coordinator Display Material Assembly Team: Camille Hayhurst, Graduate Students: Brandon Yausey, and Solomon Bayesa Each of you as faculty members!!!

Some ABET Recognitions The ABET evaluators reported that the students said great things about the accessibility and concern for their welfare showed by faculty across all three disciplines Our students are complimentary of the job Chris Randall does in our undergraduate advising office The CS Evaluators singled out Marc Seery, David Krovich and our systems office for praise as one of the strengths of the program The CpE Evaluator mentioned how remarkable he found the students from the SSAB. –(They want to help get their degree accredited)

ABET Results Electrical Engineering: –No program shortcomings –Will receive 6 years of accreditation Computer Engineering: –One Concern: Employer survey should have greater response rate and better explain program objectives –Will receive 6 years of accreditation regardless, but we will follow up on employer survey methodology Computer Science: –Accreditation will be extended, but several program weaknesses and concerns identified –With faculty effort, it should be possible through the due dilligence response process to address all weaknesses and receive 6 year accreditation

ABET Results – Computer Science Weakness #1: Program Criteria: –We do not fully meet the requirements for teaching “computer organization & architecture” –In 2006, we were able to meet that requirement through CpE271/272 but this team felt that was not enough. –Recent ACM CS program guidelines indicate that emphasis should shift from logic to higher level architecture –Possible Solution: Add CpE 310 or CS 455 as required class Weakness #2 : Curriculum (our defined outcomes) –Evaluation team felt that we did not fully meet our defined program outcomes in certain areas –CS.b “programming language translation” not fully satisfied by CS 310 Possible Solution: Modify Outcomes or Add additional requirement such as CS 410 –CS.d “computer organization, operating systems, and networks” not fully satisfied by CS 350 and CpE 271/272 Possible Solution: Modify outcomes or add CS 455/CpE 310 for computer organization, CS 350 for Operating Systems, or CS 453 for Networks

ABET Results – Computer Science Weakness #3: Continuous Improvement –We are collecting assessment data and making changes, but it is not fully clear from our records that assessment data is the driving factor behind the changes. –Possible Solution: As we work to address the CS curriculum in the upcoming months, be sure we carefully look at available data from embedded course assessments, and document that we use it in our decision process. Concern #1: ABET Outcomes –“Ability to analyze the local and global Impact of computing on individuals organizations and society” –“Ability to engage in lifelong learning” –Met primarily through Capstone Design, so entirely dependent on being covered there –Possible solution: ensure there are other courses these are covered in other courses Concern #2: Faculty –One part-time instructor did not show evidence of recent professional development activity –Possible Solutions: I will work with this instructor to develop a plan for professional development

ABET Follow-up It is imperative that we establish a standard practice for each area committee to meet and review embedded assessment from the previous semester at the start of each semester, and document the decisions from the review in their minutes. We may be able to simplify the assessment process by using a smaller number of questions from each course from semester to semester to measure achievement of particular learning outcomes. –This will also improve the consistency of the results We need to look at better processes to consistently collect recent alumni and employer survey data We continue to rely heavily on capstone design for many of the ‘lifelong learning’ and ‘social issues’ outcomes –Need to move quickly on moving one credit of senior design into the junior year for a separate seminar addressing these issues and formation of capstone design groups Now is the opportunity for thorough review and discussion of all of our programs
