TOOT HILL SCHOOL

OUR AIM To be recognised as an enterprising school by all in our local community.

HEALTH WARNING Importance Of Being Earnest: Lady Bracknell. I have always been of the opinion that a man who desires to get married should know either everything or nothing. Which do you know? Jack. I know nothing, Lady Bracknell. Lady Bracknell. I am pleased to hear it. I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance….The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square.

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT APPLYING ENTERPRISE TO A SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT MODEL Shared values & beliefs Clear goals Instructional Leadership A common mission Emphasis on Learning A climate conducive to learning Frequent monitoring of student progress High expectations Teacher collegiality & development Instructional and curriculum focus Parental & community involvement & support Positive student behaviour Recognition & incentives Physical environments Student involvement & responsibility

Where does enterprise fit in? Enterprise is a way of life. It is something we do automatically, without conscious thought. Enterprising schools are produced by the actions of all pupils and staff, each and every day.

ENTERPRISE – WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Enterprise in Learning is about pupil centred learning. It is about encouraging pupils to think for themselves, and to be independent learners. It is not about teaching them how to run a business.

New and Different ideas in T & L Using new and different ideas in T & L – –Using variety of styles – VAK (Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic) –Accelerated learning To develop, improve & enrich Developing their skills: problem solving; thinking skills; creativity Taking a risk Challenging learners to work in different ways: –Motivate learners –Have fun in lessons –Contribute to raising achievement

Key Stage 3 Workshops (Yrs 7, 8 & 9) Every tutor set in KS3 – morning workshop in Enterprise Learning These mornings are about giving students the skills to be enterprising when they come back into class It’s not about making connections with specific lessons – it’s about pupils confronting any task or solving any problem in a creative, enterprising way The more fun it is and the less it appears academic, the more creative and enterprising the students are Finally when they confront a task in the classroom, that positive experience informs what they do

TEAMWORK Task designed so pupils have to work together Challenging but fun Learning engineered: working with different people range of ability in the group

Teamwork Skills OPENNESS new ideas LISTEN to others SUPPORT those having difficulty RESPECT others opinions – focus on ‘what can we learn’ rather than ‘who is to blame’ INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY & ACCOUNTABILITY everyone has a role to play and is part of the team FEEDBACK each team selects a spokesperson who feeds back team ideas to rest of group

TEAMWORK SKILLS PROBLEM SOLVING learn to deal with disputes, problems through discussion, disagreement and agreement MANAGEMENT of time and resources – deadline to work to and limited resources ORGANISATION organise themselves to complete the task ROLES who does what? Communicator/resources manager/ideas person/mediator etc. They decide who is best suited to each role

POSITIVE FEEDBACK I would like to do something like this again. It was a good fun way of learning….. Although we didn’t win any of the activities, I thought we worked well as a team! We were asked to design a poster to show what makes an effective learner, as a team, I think we worked brilliantly.. We learnt how to work with other people who we didn’t know.
