What is Community Service? Community Service is volunteer time a person provides – usually the volunteer time is with a non-profit organization. Registered non-profit organizations have a federal tax ID number and are certified as 501 c (3) organizations. The idea behind community service is to give back to your community. Volunteering your time to help others is a great way to show you care and that you appreciate what the organization offers to the community.
4
Benefits Connect with your community Be part of something greater than yourself Support healthy decision making Students who volunteer are 50% less likely to make destructive decisions or to engage in risky behavior. Develop employment skills Develop life skills Feel good!
5
Activity As a group, generate a list of non-profit organizations in our community. Keep this list so you can refer to it easily throughout the school year.
6
Activity Please use the remainder of this period and have students in your advisory share what THEY have done for community service/volunteering. Include details so others could replicate if interested. Keep a running list – first on the board, then on paper to keep in the advisory box. If you have this from last year, get it and refer to it now. Don’t forget those fundraiser dinners you served/cleaned-up for, or the volunteer babysitting you provided, or the volunteer hours you provided for the Human Society, beach clean-up, etc. STOP HERE FOR TODAY. CONTINUE WITH THE NEXT SLIDE ON WEDNESDAY.
7
Let’s do some Community Service! Distribute the community service form to each student. These forms should be kept safely in the student’s advisory folder until needed. You can download a form from the FBHS website on the Advisory Program web page if you need another. Discuss how to complete the form. Many students have completed some hours of community service over the summer or in August or in September. Have a discussion with your students and determine if anyone in your class has completed some community service hours.
8
Let’s do some Community Service! We have 14 weeks remaining in the semester. Every student needs to complete 4 hours of community service before January 22, 2013 and provide a brief report to the advisory class. If you don’t complete your community service, you will fail advisory.

Anyone ready to present? Encourage students to begin considering community service projects. Presentations can be brief. The student needs to describe the organization and describe the community service they provided. Community Service options will be available at SOME Saturday Schools. Be sure to listen to the bulletin for an upcoming Community Service Saturday School. Give Back & Have Fun!!
