LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS
2
Definition Lumbar spondylosis is a medical condition in which chronic pain is experienced by the patient in the lower back This is due to compression of the intervertebral discs, which can leads to displacement of the vertebral bodies. The compression is normally a result of wear and tear at the facet joints due to an increase in age.
3
Pathophysiology The compressed intervertebral discs causes laxity in the annular lumbar ligaments, which leads to instability. The body then has to adapt to compensate for the instability through the formation of new bone in the area, called osteophytes. Stiffness and pain are two of the consequences of the above mentioned process. This condition is referred to as lumbar spondylosis.
