3 Movement offers many benefits to children: * Helps brain development * Promotes Self Concept * Enhances Self Esteem * Social skills * Promotes an active lifestyle to last a lifetime.

4 * Childhood obesity is more prevalent each day. * 15.7% of kids are OVERWEIGHT * 16.3% of kids are OBESE * 70% of obese children will grow up to become obese adults

5 Benefits Include: * Weight Control * Blood Pressure Control * Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease * Reduce Risk of certain Cancers (colon, stomach, etc.) * Reduce Risk of Diabetes * Increased quality of life and psychological well-being

6 Heart Disease is the #1 killer in the country. Preventable Risk Factors: * Sedentary lifestyle * Smoking * High Blood Pressure * High Cholesterol * Obesity Solution? GET ACTIVE… children need at least 30-60 minutes of physical activity each day.

7 The Family should work as a team to promote a healthy lifestyle and activity. * Use physical activity as a reward (family goes to the park, rather than food) * Buy toys/games that promote activity * Limit children’s “screen time” (TV, videogames, computer) * Exergaming= Wii fit, Xbox Kinect * Exercise as a FAMILY UNIT

8 * Use pedometers * Bike Rides, Treadmills in front of TV * Commercial Break exercises/fitness * Sign up children for Sport Teams in Community * Promote “Play dates” for physical activity

9 The backyard might look like a boring landscape to some, but it can be the location for an incredible variety of activities! * Frisbee, kickball and flag football are all games that are cheap and easy. * Wiffle Ball, basketball, baseball and soccer. * TAG Games * Obstacle courses, relay races * Visit a nearby PLAYGROUND…swings, tag, etc.

10 * Charity and Fund raisers: * Walks, runs and bike rides that could give a whole further meaning to your fitness. * Prepping for the event, gives everyone in the family an excuse to get cruising around the neighborhood.

11 All seasons have something to offer in terms of a workout.(good for parents and kids to bond) * FALL= leaf raking competition in the fall? * WINTER= SHOVEL SNOW.. snowball fight * SUMMER= vacuuming, sweeping and mopping…. Make a mix playlist for everyone * Car wash and water fight with balloons?

12 * Nintendo Wii * Xbox Kinect- great alternative for video games * Friday Night Fitness * Sport games, Wii Fit, yoga, strength training * The Wii Balance Board, tells you progress, charts your fitness.

13 * Hiking and biking * Beach/lake… swimming, rowing, canoe, kayak * Camping—collect wood, pitch tents, campfires * Ice skating or rollerblading * Rock-climbing
