StopPreviousNext Introduction In this workbook we will look at ways to find information on the Internet in different languages. We will learn: how to find websites from around the world using the MyLanguage website how to use free translation tools on the Google website how to find translated information on Victoria Online (State Government of Victoria) website 6

StopPreviousNext My Language My Language is an Australian website. It provides links to search engines, web directories and news in many different languages. You can find websites on topics such as: news and current affairs shopping and consumer information the arts and entertainment computers games science sport cooking and gardening 7

StopPreviousNext My Language website You can find the My Language website on the Internet by following these steps. 1. Move your mouse over the address bar showing the current website address. 2. Do 1 click. You will see the current website address surrounded in blue. 3. Type this website address www.mylanguage.gov.au 4. Press the Enter key on your keyboard. 8

StopPreviousNext Find a language There are almost 70 languages to choose from on the My Language website. Follow these steps to find a language on this website. 1. Go to the My Language home page. 2. Find the language of your choice. For example find German (Deutsch). 3. Move your mouse over the language (Deutsch). 4. Do 1 click. You will see the web page with a list of topics in this language. 10

StopPreviousNext Find a Topic 1. Move your mouse over the topic you want to look at. For example move your mouse over Online-Shops. 2. Do 1 click. 3. Move your mouse over the subject you want to see. For example move your mouse over Antiquitaten (antiques). 4. Do 1 click. A list of weblinks will appear. 5. Move your mouse over the weblink you want to see. 11

StopPreviousNext Google The internet is used across the world. There are many different websites in many different languages. If you are looking for a website and you do not know the website address, you can search for it by using a search engine such as Google. In this workbook you will use the Google search engine in the language of your choice. 13

StopPreviousNext The Google website You can find the Google website on the internet by following these steps. 1. Move your mouse over the address bar showing the current website address. 2. Do 1 click. You will see the current website address surrounded in blue. 3. Type this website address www.google.com.au 4. Press the Enter key on your keyboard. 14

StopPreviousNext Language Tools Google has Language tools that can help you find websites in the language of your choice. 1. Move your mouse over Language tools on the Google home page. 2. Do 1 click. You will see the Google Language Tools web page. 16

StopPreviousNext There are 5 sections on the Language Tools webpage. 1. Translated search 2. Translate text 3. Translate a web page 4. Use the Google Interface in Your Language 5. Visit Google’s Site in Your Local Domain Let’s look at these language tools. 17

StopPreviousNext Translated search Use Translated search to translate text from one language into another language. In this example we will translate the word news from English to Russian. 1. Go Translated search. 2. Move your mouse over the Search for box. 3. Do 1 click. 4. Type in the text of your search. For example type news. 18

StopPreviousNext 5. Move your mouse over the down arrow next to English. 6. Do 1 click. You will see a list of languages. 7. Move your mouse over the language you want to use. For example move your mouse over Russian. 8. Do 1 click. 9. Move your mouse over the Translate and Search box. 10. Do 1 click. You will see a list of websites for news translated from English into Russian. 19

StopPreviousNext Translate text You can use Translate Text to translate text from one language into a different language. In this example we will translate the word government from English into Turkish. 1. Move your mouse over the text box. 2. Do 1 click. 3. Type in the word you would like to translate. For example type government. 20

StopPreviousNext You can copy and paste this word into the Google search engine 1. Move your mouse to the start of the word. 2. Do 1 click with the left mouse button, hold your mouse button down. 3. Drag your mouse over the word to highlight the word in blue. 4. Let your mouse button go. 5. Do 1 click on the right mouse button. 23

StopPreviousNext Translate a web page Use Translate a web page when you find a website in one language and you want to read it in another language. In this exercise we will translate a web page from English into Polish. 1. Go to Translate a web page. 2. Move your mouse over the website address box next to http:// 3. Do 1 click. 27

StopPreviousNext 4. Type in the website address you want to translate. For example type www.vicnet.net.au 5. Move your mouse over the arrow next to the first language box. 6. Do 1 click. You will see a list of languages. 7.Move your mouse over English. 8. Do 1 click. 9. Move your mouse over the arrow next to the second language box. 28

You will see the Vicnet website translated into Polish. Note: Only the text will be translated. Some words may not be translated such as logos or the company name. 29

StopPreviousNext Google Interface in your language Use the Use Google Interface in Your Language to set the Google home page to display in your language. In this exercise we will set the Google home page to French. 1. Go to Use the Google Interface in Your Language. 2. Move your mouse over the language - French. 3. Do 1 click. 30

StopPreviousNext You will see the Google Francais (French) home page. 4. Move your mouse over the Search box. 5. Do 1 click. 6. Type in the words in French for your search. For example type fleurs (flowers). 31

StopPreviousNext Google search in your local domain You can also use Visit Google’s Site in Your Local Domain (country) to find websites in that country and in the languages of that country. Note: Google does not have search engines for every country in the world. 1. Go to Visit Google’s Site in Your Local Domain. 2. Find the flag for a country For example find Argentina. 3. Move your mouse over the flag. 4. Do 1 click. 33

StopPreviousNext Google Translate Google Translate is another translation tool. Use it to translate text, a website address or a document. 1. Go to the Google home page. 2. Move your mouse over more in the menu. 3. Do 1 click. 35

StopPreviousNext Victoria Online Victoria Online is the website of the State Government of Victoria. It is a good place to find local, state and federal government information and services. You can find the Victoria Online website on the internet by following these steps. 1. Move your mouse over the address bar showing the current website address. 2. Do 1 click. You will see the current website address surrounded in blue. 38

For example type translated information 4. Move your mouse over the word Search. 5. Do 1 click. You will see a list of weblinks about translated information. 40

StopPreviousNext Go to a website with translated information 1. Move your mouse over the weblink you want to look at. For example move your mouse over Privacy Victoria – Translated Information. 2. Do 1 click. You will see the web page for Privacy Victoria. 3. Move your mouse over the scroll bar to move down the page. 41

StopPreviousNext 4. Find the language of your choice. For this example move your mouse over Chinese. 5. Do 1 click. You will see a web page with information in Chinese. 42

StopPreviousNext Return to the Victorian Government website to start another search 1. Move your mouse over the back tool. 2. Do 1 click. 3. Repeat this action until you see the Victoria Online home page. 43

StopPreviousNext Start a new search You can search for a specific topic and language. In this example, we will search for electoral Arabic translated information. 1. Move your mouse over the search box. 2. Do 1 click. 3. Type electoral arabic translated information 4. Move your mouse over Search. 5. Do 1 click. 44

StopPreviousNext You will see a list of weblinks. 6. Move your mouse over the weblink you would like to see. For example move your mouse over Arabic – Electoral Commission. 7. Do 1 click. You will see the AEC (Australian Electoral Commission) website with information available in this language (Arabic). 8. Move your mouse over a document link. 9. Do 1 click. 45
