2 Developing Leadership Skills Leaders are not born Training and personal development help individuals improve leadership skills Leaders need to be team players

3 Human Relation Skills Needed Self –understanding Aware of one’s strengths and weakness Understanding others Each person is unique and brings different skills and attitudes to the workplace that must be nurtured and understood for the employee to feel part of the team.

4 Leader Characteristics Communication Must be clear, timely, and effective Team Building The leader must match individuals with the proper skills on each team Develop Job Satisfaction When employees are happy in their position, they are more productive at work.

5 Leader Need to empower the employees in the daily activities for the to be an effective part of the team.

7 Types of Leadership Autocratic Leaders Leader give direct orders with detailed instruction. Employees are well aware of what, when, and how work is to be performed. Auto cratic leadership is necessary for tightend security at locations like park, concerts, and sporting events. This type of leadership doesn’t encourage employees to think for themselves.

8 Democratic Leaders Encourage employees to participate in planning work, solving work related problems, and making decisions. Employees are more responsive to work changes that occur. Employees are more likely to feel like stakeholders in this situation

9 Class Assignment Identify the type of leadership that you would like to work under when you get your first real job out of high school and describe why, using complete sentences

10 Open Leaders Provide little to no direction to employees Employees clearly know the work that needs to be completed and decide the methods, details, and decisions for accomplishing the task.

11 What Do Employees Want? Employees want consistency Effective management is more concerned with human motivation to reach goals than with efficiency and control.

12 Managers must: Encourage employees participation Keep employees informed Are easy to talk to and are readily available Support employee training and development Support employees who are doing their best even when making mistakes Show appreciation for work efforts

13 Mutual Reward Theory (MRT)- is based on the premise that both parties come out ahead. Both parties standing are improved by the work that was completed. Rewards may be money, special benefits, public recognition of total efforts, or a combination of all of these.

15 Agents of Change Change is a constant in all aspects of business. All managers must be prepared for the eventual change in the organization. Employees can be resistant to change.

17 Soft Issues Soft Issues: Include attitudes, mindsets, and states of mind. Soft issues are human issues are that are difficult to measure but they must be considered for change to occur. Change requires leaders to modify the ways that people think, behave, and manage.

18 Hard Issues Downsizing : When there is a reduction in the size of the workforce. Severance packages may be offered to employees in good standing and may be structured with salary, career training, or assistance with locating a job.

20 Steps for Effective Change 1. Careful Planning for the change 2. Communicate with people to decrease the element of surprise. 3. Involve people to make them feel like they are part of the change. 4. Educate people for a better understanding of the change. 5.Support people who are expected to accept change.

21 Reductions in the Workforce Downsizing Occurs when an organization reduces its number of employees. Severance Packages A full or partial salaries for several weeks or months and allows employees time to locate new jobs. Personal training and career counseling happens in quality jobs.

23 Enlightened Leadership The type of leadership necessary for successful changes. Visionary leadership are individuals who have the vision of the future. Vince Lombardi,Bill Gates, Michael Dell, Gordie Johnson, Walter Bowden, and Bill Parcells are all example on people with these skills. Enlightened leadership means to bring out the best in people.
