1 Responding to Reading

2 Good Readers Respond To What They Are Reading!
The Question is “How” do we do it?

3 Use your Six Traits of Writing!
Ideas Organization Voice Word Choice Sentence Fluency Conventions

4 A Reader Response Includes the Following Information.
Attention Getter and Main Idea that answers the question being asked. Evidence from the text to support your answer. How you interpret the information from the text to support your answer. A Connection to the text A Closing Statement

5 Here is a question from the story Roberto Clemente.
Why is there a statue dedicated to Roberto Clemente outside the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Stadium?

6 The main idea is the whole purpose of your paper.
What’s First? As with all papers, you need an attention getter and your main idea to start your paper on the right track! For an attention getter, you find the key idea and use it to get the reader’s attention! The main idea is the whole purpose of your paper.

7 Types of Attention Getters
Traditional : Once upon a time . . . Introduction of a Character: Jesse Owens was born on September 12, 1913, on a small farm in Oakville, Alabama. Introduction of a Setting: It was summer and time to visit Grandma. Questions: Can frogs breathe under water? Introduction of a Problem: John was always home right after school, but it was getting dark and nobody had seen him since school was out. Using a Single Word: Feathers. Feathers were everywhere!

8 What are the key words in the question?
Why is there a statue dedicated to Roberto Clemente outside the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Stadium?

9 My Example Roberto Clemente was born in 1934 on the tropical island of Puerto Rico. There is a statue of him located outside the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Stadium. Do you know why?

10 Use examples from the text and what you know from the story.
The Next Part of Your Reader Response is All About Proving Your Main Idea. Use examples from the text and what you know from the story. You must also interpret or tell what why you chose the specific examples from the text that you did and how it relates to the question.

11 My Example In the story, We’ll Never Forget You, Roberto Clemente, the author states that Roberto Clemente loved baseball. In the text it says that Roberto played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and he was the 11th man in major league history to get 3,000 or more hits. I think this means that Roberto was an outstanding baseball player who was very dedicated to becoming one of the best players in his sport. He worked very hard, and he accomplished his goal of becoming one of the greatest players to make 3,000 or more hits in his baseball career. This was not an easy task because there were only 10 other people to do it besides Mr. Clemente.

12 You should have as much support from the text as you can.
I try to find at least 3 specific details from the text to support my answer.

13 When you have enough proof to back up your answer, you need to make a connection to the story!

14 Text to Text Text to Self Text to World
Making Connections Text to Text Does this story remind you of another story you have read? Text to Self Have you or anyone you know ever been in a situation like the one in the story? Text to World What do you know about the topic, time period, or place where the story occurs?

15 My Example This story reminds me of a story called Balto that I read in 3rd grade. In the story, Balto is a dog who risks his life to make sure that a town in Alaska receives medicine that they desperately need. Balto is a true hero in the story. Just like Roberto Clemente, there is a statue dedicated to Balto for his bravery and good deeds.

16 You need to end your response with a closing statement.
Closing Statements You need to end your response with a closing statement. Do you remember the different ways to wrap up a story?

17 Ways to Wrap it Up With a Great Ending!
Challenge: You should try the sport of field hockey and see for yourself. Lesson Learned: That dog never tried to catch a rabbit again. Wonder: I wonder if she will ever return? Reflection: Maybe next time I . . . Recap: None of us will ever forget how the old man helped us understand . . . Sequel: Everything was back to normal, until she decided to check the closet one more time.

18 My Example To sum it up, Roberto Clemente was a great player who sacrificed his own life to help others in their time of need. This is why there is a statue dedicated to him outside the Pittsburgh stadium. None of us will ever forget the famous baseball player, Roberto Clemente.
