Isomers and Organic Reactions

10 Points Extra Credit: Due Friday Choose a product that is in your home (i.e., shampoo, lotion, etc.) and find the chemical structures for 10 of the chemicals on the label. You may not include water or sodium chloride. You get 1 point for every structure you can find (up to 10). Provide the label, and a table containing the names of the 10 compounds and their structures (a Word document is fine). Do not be tempted to copy someone else… neither of you will receive credit!

Mini-Aim: Can two molecules with the same chemical formula be different substances? Learning Objectives: 1.Students should know the definition of ‘isomer.’ 2.Students should know how to identify isomers.

Isomers [NOT Isotopes!] Write the chemical formulas and names for the structures below. Definition of Isomers: Formula: Name:

Are these isomers? volatile colorless liquid, bp 34 o C, volatile colorless liquid/gas, bp 28 o C, colorless gas, bp 9.5 o C

Mini-Aim: How are organic reactions categorized? Learning Objectives: 1.Students should be able to identify organic reactions. 2.Students should be able to predict products when given reactants in organic reactions.

Organic Reactions Combustion: C 3 H 8 + O 2  3CO 2 + 4H 2 O Substitution: C 2 H 6 + Cl 2  C 2 H 5 Cl + HCl

Addition: C 2 H 4 + H 2  C 2 H 6 Esterification: ethanoic acid + ethanol  water + ethyl ethanoate Organic Reactions (cont.)

Saponification: fat(ester) + base  glycerol + soap Fermentation: C 6 H 12 O 6  2C 2 H 5 OH + 2CO 2

Organic Reactions (cont.) Polymerization Addition Polymerization nCH 2 CHCl  (CH 2 CHCl) n Condensation Polymerization CH 3 OH + CH 3 OH  CH 3 OCH 3 + H 2 O

(C 2 F 4 ) n PVC Kevlar Teflon
