O VERVIEW “Renaissance” means rebirth Europe moves from a society based on religion (faith) to one that is based on science (reason)

C HARACTERISTICS OF THE M USIC Vocal a capella style (in the church): no instruments Polyphony Solo instrumental music: lute or keyboard Word painting: making music reflect the text (example: going high in the music when the text uses the word “high” and going low in the music when the text uses the word "low”)
