2 Page 1 In the outskirts of Kyoto, an old man lived in a small hut. He sold firewood for tea and caught fish with his hands. Kyoto

3 Page 2 He was very happy. But one day a band of robbers came to the old man. The chief cut a bunch of sticks of a tree in a matter of seconds.

4 Page 3 The old man picked up the sticks, the sticks were green so the old man left the sticks in the corner of his hut. A year later, the old man decided to burn the sticks. When he picked them up, they fell out of his hands and formed the words, “Don’t Burn Us!” v

5 Page 4 Every day from then,the old man and the sticks “talked”. The sticks danced and and did plays for the old man, wearing grass skirts and masks. HA

6 Page 5 The robbers had grown from 20 to 100. One day the robbers came back, they had captured a maiden that was going to marry a prince.

7 Page 6 The robbers then went to an island, hung the maiden up in a cage, and forced her to sing for them. The maiden replied back, “You can’t make me”. The chief said, “A bird that doesn’t sing is not worth the bird seed”. NO A Bird That Doesn’t sing is not worth the bird seed

8 Page 7 The maiden sang, but only sang sad songs. Her songs echoed into the city and towns of Kyoto, Japan. Everybody was sad.

9 Page 8 One day the old man decided to go save the maiden. He asked the sticks if they could help. The sticks came along. Can you help? v

10 Page 9 When the old man and the sticks came to the river that surrounded the bandits camp the sticks told the man he could use them as stilts.

11 The sticks turned into stilts and helped the old man cross about halfway up the river. Some bandit guards spotted them. “Monster Monster”, the bandits yelled and fled. Page 10

12 Monster! The lochness monster. but that's for another time

13 All of the bandits ran away except for the chief. He took his sword and slashed at the sticks when they attacked. He kept on slashing and attacking. 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512 untill 1,024 then the chief fell down crying and sweating in defeat. Page 12

15 When the old man returned home, he threw the sticks in the air hoping they would come alive again. Sadly, the sticks didn’t work and the old man used them to cook his fish. Page 14

16 Everyone's life went back to normal. Plus everyone was very happy. Except for the robbers because they went to jail. Page 14
