2. Hello Families! We have had a wonderful start to our school year! The children seem to be settling in nicely. We have been getting to know each other and it is so nice to learn about each and every child’s interests! The children drank “Jitter” Juice to get their nerves out and made Friendship Snack as we discussed how we want our classrooms to be. We talked about being kind, safe, hard workers, good listeners and how we should follow the “Golden Rule.” This week, we will continue to establish rules and routines. We will then move into our first grade curriculum. ELA will start the year off with Fables, writing workshop and reading workshop. Guided reading will begin and will occur daily at your child’s instructional reading level. Math will also begin and will focus on addition and subtraction through 10. The focus for math is conceptual and will target strategies that will help children solve efficiently and successfully at his or her own comfort level. **Children need to bring their own healthy snacks every day! ** We encourage children to bring water bottles to keep at their seats. ** Birthday treats are always welcome. 3. Each classroom will have its own discipline plan. All rooms encourage positive, friendly, safe, happy and cooperative behaviors. Children are expected to sit, listen and be respectful. We will communicate as needed regarding behavior. Contact us with any questions or information that you feel we should know. Homework will not begin right away. When it is sent home, “homework” will be labeled at the top of the paper. Math is usually sent once or twice a week and is due the next day. The task is usually short in nature and is to support learning that has occurred already. Spelling and other skills work will begin in October and will come home on Mondays and be due on Fridays. All of us communicate as often as we can with you. As we progress through the year and as topics and units change, we will send home newsletters to keep you informed. You can call us, email us or jot a note to contact us at any time. Many notes and/or emails with additional information are sent weekly. Please check your child’s folder daily.
