Maximise atom economy (convert the maximum quantity of reactants to products, with few side-products) 5. Use safer solvents 6. Use renewable reactants (avoid use of reactants such as those derived from petroleum)

4. 12 Principles 1. Maximise energy efficiency 2. Avoid chemical derivatives 3. Use catalysts whenever possible 4. Design biodegradable products 5. Use real-time analysis to prevent pollution 6. Minimise the potential for accidents
