2 ► Why is it important to know about the Renaissance? ► Do we all practice the same exact sect of religion. I am sure there are many different churches people go to. ► Also shaped education system, study politics, etc.

3 Class Work Define the key terms and people to know for Chapter 5 Section 1. You have twenty minutes to complete this.

4 Section 1 Vocabulary ► Urban Society: a system in which cities are the center of political, economic, and social life. ► Secular: worldly. Not revolving around the church. ► Mercenary: a soldier that sells his services to the highest bidder. ► Dowry: a gift of money or property paid at the time of marriage, either by the bride’s parents to her husband or, in Islamic societies, by a husband to his wife.

5 Vocabulary cont. ►L►L►L►Leonardo da Vinci: a painter, sculptor, architect, inventor, and mathematician. ►F►F►F►Francesco Sforza: became the new duke of Milan after his mercenaries conquered the city. ►C►C►C►Cosimo de’ Medici: took control of Florence. Controlled the government from behind the scenes.

6 ► Lorenzo de’ Medici: Grandson of Cosimo, ruled Florence by using their wealth and personal influence. ► Niccolo Machiavelli: Wrote the book The Prince. This book is one of the most influential works on political power in the Western World.

7 Renaissance and Reformation Chapter 5 Sections 1

8 ► Renaissance means “rebirth”. ► Renaissance began in what country? ► Began in Italy, but spread throughout Europe. ► People who lived in Italy between 1350 & 1550 believed they were witnessing a rebirth of ancient Greek and Roman ideas.

9 ► First, Renaissance Italy was largely an urban society. City-states became the center of Italian political, economic, and social life.

10 Quick Check ► What does Urban Society mean? ► It is another word for large modern industrial city.

11 ► Second, the Renaissance was an age of recovery from the disasters of the 14th century. (Plague, political instability, and decline of Church power.)

12 Raise Hand to Answer ► At the time of the Renaissance what became the center of the Italian political, economic and social life? ► City States

13 ► Third, a new view of human beings emerged as people in the Italian Renaissance began to emphasize individual ability. ► Ex: Leonardo Da Vinci ► “Men can do all things if they will” Meaning- High regard for capability for achievements of men

14 City States ► Three of the most powerful city-states in Italy at this time were: Milan, Venice, and Florence.

15 Milan ► Milan: The Visconti family established themselves as the dukes of Milan. ► However, Francesco Sforza became the new duke in 1447. He used mercenaries to help him take power.

16 Turn and talk ► Does anyone know what the word mercenary means? Lets turn and talk for 1 minute to see if we can help each other out. Turn to the person directly to the right of you. ► Paid soldiers who fought for the person who paid the most money.

17 ► Venice: a republic with one ruler known as a Doge. In reality, a small group of aristocrats actually ran the government. ► Red= don’t write- were wealthy traders that ran government based on what they wanted. Ex: Little kids that want candy.

18 Florence ► Florence: ruled by the Medici family from “behind the scenes.”

19 Florence (cont.) ► Girolamo Savonarala, a preacher, began condemning the corrupt Medici family and gained so many supporters, the Medici family gave up their power. ► The preacher gained support because of decline in selling main product, cloth.

20 Niccolo Machiavelli ► wrote the book The Prince. ► This book is one of the most influential books on political power. ► The book describes how a person should gain and keep power.

21 Niccolo Machiavelli (cont.) ► He believed morality should be left out of the thought process when making decisions on politics.

23 Class Work You will write a short essay explaining if you agree with Machiavelli’s ideas on politics. Explain why or why not. Read the section about him on pg 160-161. Hold these until we discuss them.

24 Exit Slip ► Which of the people that we talked about in this section interested you most. Why were they interesting? Must pick one.

25 ► Vocabulary Quiz Tomorrow on all words. ► You will get a remind 101 this afternoon if you signed up. ► The book is online on my website, if you do not have internet check out a book. Also the study game for Vocab Quiz is on there.

26 Write Question and Answer 1. What was the population of France in 1450? 2. What country and at what time was the largest of all these? 3. Between 1450 and 1500 which two countries swapped being ahead of each other?

27 Humanism ►H►H►H►Humanism: based on the study of the literary works of ancient Rome and Greece. ►P►P►P►Petrarch: known as the father of Italian Renaissance humanism. He looked for the ancient manuscripts in libraries around Europe.

28 Humanism (cont.) ► Humanist believed that they should live a life for one’s state. ► Humanists believed education could dramatically change human beings. ► Their main focus was on the liberal arts. (Literature, philosophy, history, etc.

29 Humanism (cont.) ► They also believed in physical education. ► The idea of a humanist education was not to create scholars, but to create well rounded individuals.

30 Renaissance ► The Renaissance also led to new ideas on art. ► They created Frescos, a fresco is a painting done on fresh, wet plaster with water-based paints.

31 Renaissance (cont.) ► Realism painting also grew during this time. ► Realism painting studies the organization of space and light, and the study of human movement.

32 Renaissance (cont.) ► Most of the famous painters from the Renaissance era were from the period known as the High Renaissance (1490- 1520). ► This included Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo.

33 Renaissance (cont.) ► Michelangelo is most known for the painting of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

41 Knowing nothing about what is going on here how do you think these men look like they are acting. Pretend you are writing what is going on and write some lines of dialogue.

42 The Protestant Reformation Chapter 5 Sections 3 & 4

43 Protestant Reformation ► The Protestant Reformation is the name given to the religious reform movement that divided the western Church into Catholic and Protestant groups. ► Christian Humanism: believed in the ability of human beings to reason and improve themselves.

44 Protestant Reformation (cont.) ► Desiderius Erasmus: believed that Christianity should show people how to live good lives rather than provide a system of beliefs that people practice to be saved. ► Erasmus wanted to reform the Church by providing education in the works of Christianity and criticize the abuses of the Church.

45 Protestant Reformation (cont.) ► The Church at this time had become very corrupt. The popes had become more interested in the politics of Italy than with spiritual matters.

46 Protestant Reformation (cont.) ► Many church officials were also concerned with money and used their position in the church to gain wealth. ► Some priests were ignorant of their spiritual duties.

47 Protestant Reformation (cont.) ► People wanted to be reassured of their salvation, but it was hard to find a good priest. ► The selling of relics and certificates for an indulgence became common practice. ► Indulgence: release from all or part of the punishment for sin.

48 Protestant Reformation (cont.) ► Martin Luther: monk and professor at the University of Wittenburg where he lectured on the Bible.

49 Bellwork Write a short essay explaining your opinion on the selling of indulgences. Do you agree or disagree with indulgences? Why/Why not? At least four sentences!

50 Bell Work Read the first paragraph under the Blue Heading “The Ninety-Five Theses” on page 173. Write a one sentence summary statement of that paragraph.

51 Protestant Reformation (cont.) ► Catholic teaching stressed both faith and good works were needed to gain salvation. ► Luther came to the conclusion that only faith in God could gain a person salvation.

52 Protestant Reformation (cont.) ► Because Luther based his belief on the study of the Bible, the Bible became the only source of religious truth for Protestants. ► Luther was very upset by the selling of indulgences. He sent a list of 95 Theses to local church officials. Thousands of copies were made and spread throughout Germany.

53 Protestant Reformation (cont.) ► Luther began calling for a separation from the Church. The Church was unable to accept Luther’s ideas and excommunicated him from the Church in 1521. ► The Edict of Worms made Luther an outlaw and all of his works were to be burned.

54 Protestant Reformation (cont.) ► In the following years, Luther’s ideas spread and more people began attending his worship services. ► This became know as Lutheranism, the first protestant church.

55 Protestant Reformation (cont.) ►P►P►P►Peace of Augsburg: agreement formally accepted the division of Christianity in Germany. ►T►T►T►This did not allow for individual religious freedom, this was left up to the ruler of the state a person lived in.

56 ► John Calvin: protestant reformer that believed in predestination. ► Predestination: belief that God has decided in advance who will be saved. ► Reformation in England: the Church of England (Anglican Church) was created by Henry VIII.
