Ratios and Units of Measure
Notes 5.1, DATE_____________ Ratios and Units of Measure
2
Vocabulary: Measurement
Process we use to find size, quantities, or amounts. Today we will learn to convert from one unit to another by canceling units, how to find the ratio of quantities, and how to find unit rate
3
What does each unit measure?
Unit of Measurement. 1) Inches, feet, miles, meters 2) 3) Seconds, minutes, hrs. 4) Ounces, pounds, kilos 5) Degree fahrenheight, Celsius 6) Degrees, radians 7) What are you measuring? 1) Distance 2) Area 3) Time 4) Weight 5) Temperature 6) Angular measure 7) Volume
4
Can convert from one unit to another if both units measure the same thing!
Example. 3 feet = 36 inches 6 inches = .5 feet
5
Steps for converting from one unit to another:
1) Write what you are given over one 2) Choose the correct conversion factor for the unit you want 3) Multiply the given by the conversion factor so that units cancel 4) Solve for requested Unit
6
Ex 1) How many centimeters are in 3 inches?
2) Conversion factor: 1in = 2.54 cm. 3) 4) =
7
Ex 2) 10m = _______ cm 1) 2) Conversion factor: 1 m = 100 cm 3) 4) =
8
Ex 3) Change 29 qt. to gallons.
1) 2) Conversion factor: 4 qts. = 1 gallon 3) 4)
9
Ex 4) Convert 515 km/h to miles/hour?
1) 2) Conversion factor: 1.6 km = 1 mile 3) 4) =
10
Write each ratio in lowest terms.
Make sure they are in the same unit first!!! 1) 14 kg : 35 kg 2) 80 m : 400 cm 1 m = 100 cm 3) 16 h : 2 days 24 h = 1 day
11
Find each unit rate. 1) 2) Price for one!! Divide!!!! 135 mi : 3 h
