Environment and poverty 22 January 2015Environmental Sustainability and SDGs3 Forest ecosystems provide shelter, livelihoods, water, fuel and food security for more than 2 billion people. Fisheries supply 15% of the animal protein in our diets, rising to more than 50% in many of the least developed countries in Africa and Asia. Marine ecosystems support more than 660 million jobs globally. Global Freshwater demand is projected to exceed current supply by more than 40% by 2030. However, 786 million people still don’t have a safe, clean water supply. The estimated cost of environmental damage globally in 2008 was USD 6.6 trillion – equivalent to 11% of global GDP Indigenous peoples constitute approximately 5% of the world’s population, they make up 15% of the world’s poor and one third of the world’s extremely poor
