Let’s review subjects and verbs!

What is a subject? The subject is ____ or ____ the sentence is about.

Action Verbs Let’s talk about action verbs first.

Action Verb Practice I greatly admire her talent.
Underline the subject once and the verb twice in the following sentences. *Remember that the prepositional phrase won’t contain either one. I greatly admire her talent. She uses a wooden ball as the puppet’s head. She stuffs the body with straw. Then she paints on the face.

Linking Verbs These verbs link a subject to a noun or adjective in the predicate that rename or describe it. For example: The taxi is yellow with black checks. Yellow is an adjective describing taxi. *Remember that a prepositional phrase will not contain the subject, verb, or what the subject is being linked to. ( ) _______________________ ____ ___

Some Common Linking Verbs:

That dinner looks delicious. What if we said: Sue looked at the food.
Let’s try another one: That dinner looks delicious. What if we said: Sue looked at the food. Then would it be a linking verb? ________ _______ depending on how they are used, so watch out!! Some verbs can be action OR linking ( ) _____ ____________ NO!!!

Linking Verb Practice Underline the subject once, the verb twice, and then draw an arrow from the subject to the word(s) in the predicate that rename or describe the subject. *Remember to watch out for prepositional phrases. Most women in the United States became homemakers during the 1800s. Their work was very important. Many frontier women were also hunters. Those days seem distant to us today. Later, factory and office jobs became possible for women.

Guilds grew very important in local government. 15. The merchant guilds were powerful throughout Europe.

Helping Verbs These verbs are part of a verb phrase.
They come before the main verb. Helping verbs help state the action or show time. For example: Kim has passed everyone in the race. We are decorating the Easter eggs. ______ _________________ ____ ________________________

Watch out though! Sometimes the words in a verb phrase are separated.

…in questions In a question, the subject often comes between words in the verb phrase. For example: Do the candidates plan to debate? Here’s a hint to help-Change the question to a statement. This will put the verb phrase together. The candidates do plan to debate. ____ ______________ _______ _______________ ____________ SEE!!

and by negatives, etc. The negative not can also come between words in a verb phrase. For example: Some of the people will not see it. Other words like always and never are also not ever part of a verb phrase!!! The Supreme Court has not always had nine justices. _______ ______ _____ ______________________ _____ ______

Helping verb/verb phrase practice:
Underline the subject once and verb phrase twice. *Remember some of the phrases might be separated. We have been learning about the election process. 2. U.S. voters have always voted by secret ballot. Each citizen over the age of eighteen can vote. The candidates must explain their ideas to the voters. Voters must get information about the candidates. Each person will vote for his or her preferred candidates. The President’s inauguration will happen in January.

Verb Phrases A verb phrase is made up of a helping verb(s) and a main verb. It is basically when the verb in the sentence is more than one word, it can be two or even three words together. For example: She is helping her friend move. *Notice that the subject is only doing one thing, but that one thing is more than one word long. _____ ________________

Compound Verbs A compound verb is when there is more than one verb in a sentence. For example: She helped her friends move and ate dinner with them. *Notice in this sentence the subject is doing two separate actions. _____ ____________ ____

Can you have both? Look at this sentence. It has a
compound verb of verb phrases!!! I was reading very intently, and I didn’t hear the teacher call my name! *Notice that the word didn’t is short for did not, so make sure to leave that out of your verb phrase! __ _________________ __ ____ _______
