What is the Academic Decathlon? The Academic Junior High Decathlon is a competition for students in grades 6-8. There are TEN events. Logic Quiz – Group Participation (10 students); maximum points earned – 8,000 points Super Quiz – Group Participation (10 students) ; 50 multiple choice questions on FIVE subjects: Religion; Literature; Fine Arts/Music; Science; and Social Studies; maximum points – 8,000 points Individual Categories – EIGHT Subjects: Roman Catholic doctrine; English; Literature; Science; Mathematics; Current Events; Social Studies; and Fine Arts (Art and Music); Maximum Points per Subject = 1,000 points; 8,000 points Total

Who Can Join the Team? Junior High Students (6 th, 7 th and 8 th graders) are eligible to join the Team! What QUALIFICATIONS should you POSSESS? Must LOVE to LEARN! Must be DEDICATED Must be a TEAM PLAYER Must be able to WORK COLLABORATIVELY with your Study Partner and the Group Must be ORGANIZED AND ABLE TO MANAGE YOUR TIME EFFICIENTLY Must DO WELL UNDER PRESSURE! Must have EXCELLENT STUDY SKILLS

How Do I Join the Team? Complete Information Packet: A parent/student contract must be completed and submitted A logic packet to be completed and submitted Attend at least 70% of scheduled logic meetings All students who meet qualifications will be permitted to join the Team: 10 Student Competitors remaining students – Alternates/Study Partners

How Much Commitment is it? There is a lot of commitment with regards to studying & time. lunchtime meetings afternoon meetings after school (most likely on Tuesdays and/or Fridays) off campus meetings (probably on Saturdays) please visit www.acadecatigers.com to view scheduled meetings and additional study materialswww.acadecatigers.com

Parent Commitment Picking up your decathlete after the afternoon study sessions (around 4:30 pm) Driving your decathlete to off-campus study sessions (most likely at Mrs. Arostegui’s home near Jesuit High School on Saturdays) Participate in proctoring at the actual competition for Logic and Super Quiz Support decathletes by providing snacks for afterschool study sessions Support you decathlete by assuring that enough time is spent studying for their subjects and that they complete their logic packets. When possible, assist your decathlete in learning their specific materials.
