TYPES OF ENERGY
3
Energy Ability to do work Can not be created or destroyed Can be transformed from one form to another
5
Potential Energy Stored energy Has the potential to move Stretched out rubber band
6
Kinetic Energy Due to its motion Releasing the rubber band
7
What is Mechanical Energy? o Energy due to a object’s motion (kinetic) or position (potential). The bowling ball has mechanical energy. When the ball strikes the pins, mechanical energy is transferred to the pins!
8
Examples of Mechanical Energy
9
Light Energy Energy that is made of electro- magnetic radiation and travels in a straight path.
10
What is Thermal Energy? oHeat energy oMeasured by heat o The heat energy of an object determines how active its molecules are. A hot object is one whose atoms and molecules are excited and show rapid movement. A cooler object's molecules and atoms will show less movement.
11
Solar Energy Energy from the Sun Solar Panels
12
What is Electrical Energy? o Energy flowing through an electric circuit o Energy caused by the movement of electrons o Easily transported through power lines and converted into other forms of energy
13
Sound energy Energy in which you can hear and that travels in vibrating waves through the air. It's the energy present in a sound wave.
14
QUIZ TIME! Electrical energy is transported to your house through power lines. When you plug an electric fan to a power outlet, electrical energy is transform into what type of energy? MECHANICAL ENERGY
15
What types of energy are shown below? Mechanical and Thermal Energy (Don’t forget friction)
16
What types of energy are shown below? Electrical and Mechanical
17
What type of energy is shown below? Thermal Energy
18
What forms of energy can you identify in this picture? How is energy being used? Light energy- used for decoration and light Mechanical energy- used to move the parts of the rides Sound energy- used to produce the music and other sounds we hear
19
What forms of energy can you identify in this picture? How is energy being used? Solar energy- used to create electricity for the home. Solar energy can also be used to heat water for homes.
20
What forms of energy can you identify in this picture? How is energy being used? Wind energy- used to generate electricity Mechanical energy- used to assist in moving the blades Solar energy- used by plants to make food
21
What forms of energy can you identify in this picture? How is energy being used? Mechanical energy- The cranes use mechanical energy to move. Thermal Energy- Many factories use heat to produce steam to drive machines. Light Energy: refraction from the clouds; reflection on the water
22
What forms of energy can you identify in this picture? How is energy being used? Heat energy- used to warm the Earth Solar energy (Light energy) - used by plants to make food
23
Pass out Energy Transfer notes
24
Energy Transfer Chemical Electrical Sound (mechanical) Light (Electromagnetic) Thermal Mechanical
26
What is Electromagnetic Energy? o Light energy o Includes energy from gamma rays, xrays, ultraviolet rays, visible light, infrared rays, microwave and radio bands
27
What is Chemical Energy? o Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions. The chemical bonds in a matchstick store energy that is transformed into thermal energy when the match is struck.
28
Examples of Chemical Energy
29
QUIZ TIME! What type of energy cooks food in a microwave oven? ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY What type of energy is the spinning plate inside of a microwave oven? MECHANICAL ENERGY
30
QUIZ TIME! What energy transformation occurs when an electric lamp is turned on? ELECTRICAL ENERGY ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY
31
What type of energy is shown below? Chemical Energy
32
What type of energy is shown below? Chemical Energy (yummy)
33
Draw a flow map showing the flow of energy transformations in a car from starting vehicle to driving. You should have 5 different types of energy.
