2 PAMIS is a voluntary organisation and registered charity based in Scotland We are a Unit within the faculty of Education & Social Work, University of Dundee PAMIS is a member of the Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability PAMIS – in partnership with people with profound learning disabilities & their carers

3 We work in partnership with people with profound & multiple learning disabilities, their families and professionals PAMIS has offices in Fife, Glasgow, Grampian, South Lanarkshire and Tayside Our head office is based in the White Top Research Unit, at the University of Dundee

4 PAMIS – in partnership with people with profound learning disabilities & their carers VIG: dynamic & interactive training Aims: to improve effective communication in the situation where it naturally occurs, building on each individuals unique and effective style.  Raising self awareness and reflection  Increasing attuned responses to others  Activating clients to solve their own problems  Reframing perceptions  Reducing stress and increasing self confidence  Achieving collaborative relationships

5 PAMIS – in partnership with people with profound learning disabilities & their carers VIG : benefits to an organisation VIG provides the opportunity for:  motivation – recognising strengths and promoting self-directed learning  co-operation and learning – through satisfying and effective communication  Sustained change and independence – by engaging the recipient as an equal partner in the problem solving/ learning process.

6 PAMIS – in partnership with people with profound learning disabilities & their carers VIG: positive interaction VIG: positive interaction  Create heightened awareness of verbal and non verbal communication skills  Used in a number of different ways by different resources  Not professional staff instruction but self reflection

7 PAMIS – in partnership with people with profound learning disabilities & their carers VIG: example 1 VIG: example 1 Care agency staff working in family home:  Improve communication between staff and young girl with PMLD  Short course being developed, piloted and evaluated  Training course to be offered by social work

8 PAMIS – in partnership with people with profound learning disabilities & their carers VIG: example 2 VIG: example 2 Adult Day Centre Staff:  Member of staff taking VIG trainers course  3 video sessions with day centre worker  Parent and staff view video pieces together  Parent and staff share information  Staff identify themselves were to improve communication

9 PAMIS – in partnership with people with profound learning disabilities & their carers Videoing sessions  10 minute positive piece of video  Micro-analysis carried out and 3 short clips chosen  Staff view and form communication goals  Future plan  Staff assessed by VEROC (Dundee University)  Certified through phases 1 - 3
