Many people are familiar with the image of a flute-playing snake charmer sitting cross-legged while a large snake rises up out of a woven basket, enticed by the music. The snake in the basket is the deadly king cobra. King Cobras By Stacy King

King cobras live in the rainforests and plains of China, Asia, and India. This snake can grow to 18 feet in length, making the king cobra the longest of all venomous snakes. The king cobra adapts easily to a variety of environments. King cobras are comfortable in trees, on land, and in the water. They eat lizards, eggs, small mammals, and other snakes. The king cobra is one of the most venomous snakes in the world. As if being incredibly venomous weren’t enough, this snake can “stand up” and look its victim in the eye. When confronted, king cobras rise and move forward to attack with close to King Cobras By Stacy King one-third of their bodies held straight up. As they attack, king cobras also flare their neck hoods and hiss. Their hiss is a deep sound, often described as sounding like a growling dog.

The king cobra’s venom is not the most deadly venom in the world; although, with one bite, they inject enough venom to kill up to 20 people! Lucky for us, king cobras are shy snakes and avoid humans most of the time. When cornered, however, the king cobra becomes fiercely aggressive. King Cobras By Stacy King
