2. OBJECTIVES Students will learn the different musical notes
Students will recognize musical symbols and understand what they mean
Utah Fine Arts – Music Core Curriculum, Sixth Grade, Standard 3, Objective 3.
Discuss and present these objectives to the students.

3. ANTICIPATORY SET IDENTIFY MUSICAL SYMBOLS
I will show flash cards with musical symbols identified by name and shape i.e. Treble Clef, Bass Clef, Key Signature, Timing, and Different Notes. We will review the symbols and say them together.

4. TEACHING MUSICAL NOTES ARE DIFFERENT DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENT NOTES
I will explain the differences between the notes. There are whole notes, quarter notes, half notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes.

5. MODELING TREBLE CLEF AND BASS CLEF KEY SIGNATURE AND TIMING
WHOLE NOTES, QUARTER NOTES, HALF NOTES
I will draw the musical symbols on the whiteboard with colored dry erase markers and will ask the kids to name the symbols as I write them on the board.

6. MODELING EIGHTH NOTE PAIR AND 4 SIXTEENTH NOTES
I will draw notes on the whiteboard with colored dry erase markers in lines of music. There will be a whole note, quarter note, half note, eighth note pair, and 4 sixteenth notes.
Explain that music is pleasing to the ears because the notes are different. Play video clip of Carpenter’s “On Top of the World”. Have the kids all stand up, dance, and sing to the music.

7. CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING
Name the correct musical symbol
I will have pictures of the Treble Clef, Bass Clef, Key Signature, Timing, and Different Notes taped around the room. As I ask questions about the symbol and shape, the students will point to the correct answer.

8. GUIDED PRACTICE/MONITORING

I will give each student a handout with the musical symbols on the left hand side and the names of the symbols on the right hand side. The students will be asked to match the symbols with the names. They will have 5 minutes to complete the activity and then we will review the answers together..
I will direct a question and answer session asking each student a question and having them respond with an answer.

9. CLOSURE
Different musical notes make songs more interesting and pleasing to hear.
We learned musical symbols help organize music so we know what notes to play/sing, how to play/sing them, and when to play/sing them.
Review the objectives with the students.

Quiz-Labeling the musical symbols
I will give the students a quiz to test their knowledge. I will hand them the quiz which will be a picture of all the musical symbols and notes we have reviewed. They will label the symbols with the correct name and turn in their paper.
