Outline for Today (ayahs 8-12) Learn about the group of hypocrites Speech of the hypocrites Deception of the hypocrites Diseased hearts vs. covered hearts Corruption vs. Peace of the hypocrites Lessons & Reflections

Verse 8

There are 3 groups: 1. Believers 2. Disbelievers 3. Hypocrites part of; some people do this; Allah SWT does not describe these people as people who have taqwa or as kaafir, because they are neither; Hypocrites  they always try to be in the middle

Context This group emerged in Madinah The Muslims were growing in numbers and becoming popular, so these people claimed to be Muslim just to be accepted They were doing this for dunya purposes and losing their akihrah in return

Verse 8 This after “maa” gives the meaning of “not”

Verse 8 An Naas – Different roots and meanings: 1. To dangle, to swing back and forth 2. To forget; those who forget 3. To love; to have friendships; humans tend to become familiar with each other

Verse 9

To conceal the reality and keep the other person unaware about it; a person says something but means something else Literal: hair; something that is fine; to know beware of the fine details; Technical: To perceive something, understanding something (a level higher than knowledge)

Verse 10

Any kind of imbalance in the body; includes mental illnesses as well 2 diseases of the heart: Doubts (shubuhaat) Desires (shahawaat) Doubt about the Qu’ran & Prophet saw When doubt and disease enters the heart, it extinguishes imaan

To increase; why does Allah SWT allow the disease to increase? Because it’s a natural consequence and if you don’t treat it, or cure it, it will only grow Allah only facilitates what’s in your heart

Aleem  that which gives pain For these people there is a painful punishment Its both severe and constant The hypocrites will be in the lowest level of hell fire; also they will be returned to the hell fire VERSUS the punishment for the previous group (disbelievers): An intense and everlasting punishment Verse 10

Verse 10 Why a Painful Punishment? A lie; something against reality (Kaanoo) Habitually lying; they lied about being liars 3 signs of a Hypocrite: When he speaks, he tells a lie When he makes a promise, he breaks it When he is trusted with something, he breaks the trust

Lessons Learned Hypocrites lie, deceive and try to harm other people, from the inside out Believers are not treacherous people You are being foolish if you are trying to lie to Allah SWT Being 2-faced leads to loss of intelligence (lack of perception – shaa’r)

Verse 10 - Review

REFLECTIONS?

Until Next Class… Self-Analysis… Is my private and public life the same? Do I believe in my heart, and not just on the tongue? Do I lie constantly? If not, am I trying to stop white lies as well? Do I swear oaths and reaffirm my belief constantly? Go over translation of ayahs 6-10 Next Week: More symptoms of hypocrites
