Virgil Born: October 15, 70 B.C.E. Andes, Italy Died: September 21, 19 B.C.E. Brundisium, Italy He was born into a poor family and until the marriage of his sister he was unable to go to school. went on to Rome to study rhetoric (the study of writing), medicine, and mathematics before giving himself to philosophy. His education prepared him for the profession of law (the alternative was a military career), but he spoke only once in court because he was shy and no match against the other well spoken lawyers.

Ovid Born: 43 B.C.E. Sulmo, Italy Died: c. 18 C.E. Tomis (now Constanta, Romania) He was born into a wealthy family and studied law for many years and worked in some legal but he disliked the work and lacked political ambitions. After leaving the legal field he became a well known poet of his time. He was exiled in 8 or 9 C.E. to Tomi because of a poem that he wrote that made fun of conventional love poetry.
