Introduction Technology has created new opportunities for educational institutions – Students seeking a career – Students continuing their education – Workers looking to enhance current skills – Workers looking to change careers (Lindner, Dooley, & Kelsey, 2012).

Introduction Why online learning for students – Opportunities for students to attend classes who may not have any other opportunities Removes time and distance obstacles – Flexibility – Opportunity to take classes that may not be offered locally – Cost (Nagel, Maniam, & Leavell, 2011).

Introduction Why online learning for institutions – Student/instructor ratio – Brick and mortar structures – Using existing technology and infrastructure – Scheduling flexibility (Nagel, Maniam, & Leavell, 2011).

Summary Teaching Online is a relatively new profession National Center for Education Statics – Approximate increase of 11 Million students taking online classes between 2002-2006 – Expect steady increases in the future
