PDP COMPONENTS A Common Sense Plan built on strengths!
1. What do I want to change? REFLECTION/ RATIONALE 2. What can I reasonably do? GOAL 3. How will I check progress? ASSESSMENT 4. Who could help? COLLABORATION 5. What are the steps? ACTIVITIES 6. How can I show progress? EVIDENCE 7. How often should I reassess ANNUAL REVIEW & FINAL SUMMARY The first thing you see is REFLECTION—that is something you have been doing every day you teach and on days you don’t teach It is one of the things we will do in this class to to ensure that you settle on a goal that you care about, that is so important to you, that you would have to be working on it anyhow, and it is so important to you that you can work on it for two or three years.

Step I Before Writing the Plan: Self-Reflection Process
Self-reflection is a critical component of professional growth that involves an analysis of feedback about professional performance and its relationship to student learning data. Examples of Self-Reflection Processes: Reflection journal logs Student, peer, and parent feedback Collection of student data overtime Analysis from classroom observations Examination of critical incidents Rubrics describing components of good teaching based on WI Educator Standards As you self reflect, look for: Patterns of performance Areas of interest and compelling need Self evaluate nature of effectiveness with students and designated results (district, school, classroom, personal / professional) Effectiveness of teaching based on student learning results See page 4 of the Draft PDP for Wisconsin Educators and forms in the Appendix section. Review the sample plan – from the Professional Educator Work Team. 9 N. Marsho, 2007 9

Reflect on that thing you do…. http://ideas. gstboces
A PDP is about that thing you do… every day—you teach and you learn. Every day there are countless moments when you positively impact kids. In the next 5 minutes write SUCCESS Notes Write 5 post-it notes of things that happened in class today that you are proud of. Write 5 post-it notes of accomplishments this year you are proud of. Write 5 post-it-notes of future work you must do to meet district, building, team, or curricular goals. Who can give me an example of a moment that went well Accomplishment Something you have to work on— Complete your post-it notes and then set them aside for use in a few minutes
11
On the last page of your PDP Workbook you have a Page with the Teaching Standards
Walk around the room and find a partner for each of the ODD Teacher Standards. (1,3,5,7,9) Make sure you each put the other person’s name in the box of the standards. Take your seat after you have found five partners.
12
Wisconsin Standards-P
Wisconsin Standards-P.2 (Pages 2 & 3 in IE TOOLKIT, Pages 16 and 17 in Wkbk.) 1.Subject Matter Knowledge 2. Student Development 3. Diverse Learners 4. Instructional Strategies 5. Learning Environment 6.Communication Techniques 7.Instructional Planning 8. Assessment 9. Reflective Practitioner 10. Professional Relationships 10 minutes and then check in
13
Step I: REFLECTION Reflect on Teaching Standards: Take your Post-its & Packet Page 2 and Find your Standard 1 Partner Work together and sort your cards on the standards squares-P 2 (Pupil Services Standards include the ten teaching standards plus seven more which are on page 15 of your PDP workbook). Talk with your partner: How many cards did you place on each standard? Did some cards match multiple standards? Which standard might be included in your PDP? Why?
14
REFLECTION is PDP Step 1 Reflect on the teaching standards
Reflect on the district demographics Reflect on team/district/subject area goals Reflect on the amount of time you have for plan Reflect on the characteristics of a good goal Reflect on best teaching practices In CLASS you will write: REFLECTION & DESCRIPTION of SITUATION As HOMEWORK: Edit your Reflection and Description of Situation Read and Reflect on “The Teacher Level Factors” by Bob Marzano DRAFT your GOAL Register on one of the sites for creating an online PDP We will do some of this reflecting here—in fact you began that work by writing your post it notes This reflection will help you create parts of the plan.
15
STEP by STEP AGENDA “Working slow to go fast”
Week One-REFLECTION Write Reflection Write Description of Situation Determine Timeline Rough Draft of Goal Become familiar with websites you will use Week Two-GOAL Writing Refine Goal Write Objectives Write Activities & identify possible collaborators on activities Week Three-BEYOND Goal Approval Evaluate PDP Write plan for assessing Discuss finding PDP Reviewers Learn about Implementing Plan & Writing Annual Reviews Review PDP Verification and License Application process

Step 1: REFLECTION Reflect on Teaching Practice –Page 3 (p
Step 1: REFLECTION Reflect on Teaching Practice –Page 3 (p. 11 in IE TOOLKIT) Highlight materials you plan to review this week to reflect on your teaching practice? Take a few notes about materials you may have. In addition to reflecting on what you have done in the immediate past, near past and what you must do in the future, it will help you come to a good decision about the content of your goal if you take time this week to reflect on other materials. Some indeas are on page 3 in your workbook. Materials you choose may be things you reference in your rationale. 3 minutes
19
Description of position Number of years in position
Part II A: Description of Situation Circle the following info in Ben’s example— Page 4 Workbook (Example 2 from page 12 in IE Toolkit) Description of position Number of years in position Urban, suburban or rural setting Ethnic, special needs, and socioeconomic makeup of school Building and/or district goals/mission REFLECT on Teaching Situation: We are using Ben’s PDP as a model. We use model’s all the time when we teach and grade. Exemplars. As you evaluate. As you learn about the parts that have to be included in Part II A think about the next question.
20
Step II: Description of Situation-Page 4 (P. 23 in Toolkit)
Why would it be useful to consider the ethnicity, special needs, and socio-economic diversity of your district’s students before writing a PDP? Debrief— Any questions about what Ben included in his Description of Situation? One question might be where did Ben get this information.
21
Where do you get demographic Information?
Should you use building or district demographics in your description of situation?
22
Where do you get District Information?
District Website Teaching Handbooks Curriculum Documents
23
Step IIA: Teaching Situation
Use the Description of Situation Worksheet on page 5 in the PDP Workbook to take notes on your teaching situation. How many of you can get started on this process. 10-15 mijnutes of worktime
24
TIMELINE: Before you set your goal you need to know how much time you have…..
Three years Is the minimum number of years in a PDP Five Years is the maximum number of years in a PDP
25
What are the steps in a TIMELINE? See P. 6 & 7 (Page 22 in IE Toolkit)
First Year is the first year you are in a job that counts. You reflect the first year & then write your plan You implement plan for 1-3 years Last Year is the year you finish a Plan and submit it to reviewers If you are here most likely LAST school year was your first year—your year of reflection. Next slide give the Classic 5 year example- even if this is you listen to the other situations so you can help each other and help future peers Following Slide talks about what counts Following Slide talks about worst case scenario
26
Timeline: What COUNTS? You must teach 3 of the 5 years of your initial educator license in order to write and implement a PDP and apply for a Professional Educator license “Teaching” means regularly seeing the same students A year-long subbing job can be counted Subbing in various classes or schools cannot You can write and implement with a five, four, or three year plan depending upon individual circumstances
27
Five Year Example Graduated in 2013
Year One : Reflect/ Write plan Year Two : Implement Plan Year Three : Implement Plan Year Four : Implement Plan Year Five : Finish Plan/Submit in Jan.
28
Most Urgent Scenario If you graduated in 2010 and anticipate you will have worked at least three of the five years of your license and have not yet written a PDP you must write it NOW. Your goal must be submitted to your three reviewers asap so you can fulfill a three year timeline. You will need to get a one-year extension to complete plan
29
Meet with Your Standard 3 Partner
Check out your license expiration date at Talk through your situation since graduation and help each other figure out your timelines. Complete the Timeline Worksheet on Page 6 in your PDP Workbook. (Page 22 and 22A and 22B in the IE Toolkit can help) Work time with Standard three partner On timeline and writing description of situation
30
BREAK/Independent Worktime
Take a break-15 minutes Work on Description of Position Work on Timeline I’m here as your resource
31
STEP IIB GOAL Think about the success cards you completed and the students you have and will have. Is an idea beginning to form in your head about a direction you may pursue as your goal?
32
REFLECT on the Characteristics of a Goal
Goal is so important to you that you would be working toward this goal anyhow. Goal is doable in the time you have. Goal is verifiable-someone else would be able to see the learning Goal impacts you and your students
33
What must a PDP goal include?
Includes learning for you and your students Recommended structure: I will …… so that my students……
34
Ben’s Sample Goal-P.8 (Page 34 in IE Toolkit)
I will learn the content of the “Literature in a Diverse America” course and plan a variety of lessons so that students will engage with literature that provides diverse perspectives and experience academic success by taking and passing formal assessments on the literature.
35
Professional Learning/ Student Learning
Meet with your Standard 5 Partner Read and Discuss two or three of the Sample Goals on page 8 and 9 of your PDP workbook. Underline the PROFESSIONAL LEARNING component of each goal. Circle the STUDENT LEARNING component. Select one goal you and your partner think is strong and be prepared to share your thoughts. Three or more— Debrief --Is it always clear in the goal how the teacher plans to assess the goal. Do you think you could offer suggestions?
36
One more look in the mirror…
The Self Assessment Tool for Professional Development Standards on pages 10 & 11 in PDP Workbook can help you identify an area of focus and provides language that will help you write a goal. For example: Appropriately use multiple assessment strategies. (Standard 8) Goal: I will research assessment strategies and revise my assessments in Grade 6 math so that students have varied feedback and multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning.
37
So, as you are reading and rating, think about the application of the standard statements in your situation. Understand best practice research in my classroom teaching. (Standard 2) I will learn about RtI best practices in reading and writing and implement these practices in my RtI class so that students will show growth in the standards when retested on assessments including MAPS assessment.
38
Using the Self Assessment Tool
Answer questions 1-41 by circling a response 0-4 Put a star next to ones that you find most engaging and applicable to your situation. Transfer your scores to pages of the PDP Workbook. Average the scores and look at your areas of Strength (3.2-4), Growth ( ), and Priority ( ). 10 minutes and then check in
39
Pick one of your Strengths identified in the survey and write two or more post-it notes with strategies you use that relate to that standard. Read the suggestions of others for that same standard. I will type up your suggestions and send them out.
40
Reflect on Best Practice
As you contributed teaching ideas and strategies related to the teaching standards, you were sharing best practices. As teachers who write PDPs you are engaged in a career-long search for best practice and best practitioners. A common activity in a PDP is reflecting on professional literature. Robert Marzano is a recognized expert in best practice. Before the next class, please read “Teacher Level Factors” posted on the wiki and respond to the article on the 321 response sheet.
41
Where do you get forms, FAQs, and DPI contact info if you have questions? PDP - Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
42
ONLINE PDP IS RECOMMENDED
DEMO this site You are highly encouraged to post your PDP online. Most teachers have access at either WECAN or QEI. Please visit the sites before the next class, determine which is available to you for free and establish an account. Myqei.org
43
I can view your PDP on WECAN as you write it if you grant me special access from the main page. Enter my address, assign a password and click on send . This is not the same as selecting me as a reviewer. “Special Access” Demo This is very helpful because once you choose reviewers you can’t alter your plan until they approve or not approve.
44
Homework due Thursday : 1. STEP I Reflection 2
Homework due Thursday : 1. STEP I Reflection 2. STEP IIA Description of teaching situation 3. Establish a PDP account preferably at WECAN or at QEI 4. Share completed STEP I and IIA with me: Grant me “special access” on the WECAN site by entering my address and giving me password to use. OR an attached document to me at Homework due by next class: 1.MarzanoTeacher Factors Article and 3,2,1 Sheet 2.Draft a possible goal—I will…so that…
45
Please Take a moment to fill out the simple feedback form on the table to help me meet your needs.
Just a Quick Check-up 3 minutes and then we’ll review homework and have a closing activity.
46
Closing Quote The brain needs and yearns for time to reflect on and talk about what is going on, and the single most important thing teachers can give themselves in this fast-paced job of teaching is time to reflect. 46
