CSU Campus as a Living Lab (CLL)Program ▪ Sponsored by the CSU Chancellor’s Office - CSU Chancellor’s Commitment to Sustainability (http://www.calstate.edu/cpdc/sustainability/) ▪ Purpose: To fund projects at CSU campuses that use physical features on their campus to promote sustainability knowledge and action ▪ Projects chosen through a competitive proposal process ▪ SJSU Sustainability Board submitted a proposal and won a $12,000 grant for 2013-2014

Our CLL Project ▪ Purposes of our project: ▪ Infuse sustainability more widely throughout our curriculum ▪ Provide faculty members with engaging and useful sustainability curriculum materials ▪ Offer students an interactive, hands-on learning experience ▪ Develop deeper connections to local community colleges: ▪ De Anza College ▪ Foothill College ▪ Elements: ▪ Develop a campus sustainability map for each campus - see SJSU’s map at http://www.sjsu.edu/sustainability/sustainablecampus/sustainabilitymap/index.html http://www.sjsu.edu/sustainability/sustainablecampus/sustainabilitymap/index.html ▪ Develop 1 -2 session teaching modules, each focused on a sustainability feature ▪ Hold a workshop for faculty members from each campus on the use of the modules in teaching

Teaching Modules ▪ Modules focus on: ▪ Sustainable Agriculture Garden ▪ Cogeneration Plant ▪ MLK Library Green Building ▪ Water Wise Plants ▪ Plant Phenology ▪ Home Composting ▪ Kirsch Center Green Building ▪ Food and Waste Management ▪ Cheeseman Native Plant Communities ▪ Each module connects with a GE SLO & provides an assessment tool the instructor can use to collect data on the SLO ▪ Designed as one or two-session, stand-alone packages – a full lecture with activities, assignments and materials

Faculty Workshop ▪ Purpose: ▪ Link faculty members with modules ▪ Learn how to use the modules to incorporate sustainability into their courses ▪ Connect with colleagues ▪ Discuss the role of sustainability in our curriculum ▪ Learn how to make the modules most useful to YOU ▪ Expectations: ▪ Participating faculty members will incorporate at least on module in a greensheet ▪ Provide greensheet showing module use to us by June 15 ▪ Use at least one module in one of their classes in 2014-2015 ▪ Provide feedback to help improve the modules and your experience using them ▪ Benefits to Faculty Participants: ▪ Easy way to engage students ▪ GE Assessment for one SLO made easy ▪ All modules will be available to all

AGENDA Goals: ▪ Become familiar with modules – Presentations and discussion ▪ Explore how to use one/two modules in your course – Break out groups ▪ Provide us feedback on what you need in the modules – Discussion and Worksheet ▪ Consider next steps – Discussion and Worksheet ▪ Connect with your colleagues and learn about other campuses ▪ Enjoy a few hours discussing how you teach your students and how to engage them in sustainability issues!
