SEPARATED COLLECTION AND PROCESSING OF BIODEGRADABLE AND RECYCLABLE SOLID WASTE Local Processing and Recycling of Plastic and other recyclable waste through PRIVATE PARTICIPATION & IMPACT ON HUMAN HEALTH DURING THE PROCESS OF RECYCLING OF DRY & WET WASTE & MUNICIPAL CORPORATION An Effective Strategy For Disposal of Biodegradable and Recyclable Solid Waste
2
MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE ( MANAGEMENT & HANDLING) RULES 2000 FOR ( THREE OBJECTIVE ) EFFECTIVE ( Handling & Removal of All QuantityWith Time Bound Programme) SAFE,HYGENIC, & ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY( COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL OF SOLID WASTE,QUALITY ASPECTS OF THE WORK) ECONOMY OF OPERATIONS ; Relates To Speed and Performance of Work At Minimum Cost
3
FOUR MAIN DIRECTIVES 1. Collection and transportation of Solid Waste separately in to Biodegradable & Recyclable by the generators at source. 2.Biodegradable waste To be Processed in BIO BIN in term of organic fertilisers. 3. Recyclable waste not to go to land fill site but to be used locally by people and NGOs. 4.Till the long term processing of Biodegradable waste is established, this type waste should be disposed off at Sanitary Engineered Land Fill Site. This is an environment friendly initiative.

PROJECTS HANDLED Disaster Management post 26/07/05 –Formation of garbage police system to control the throwing of garbage on the roads and outside the garbage bins. –Adoption of Nalas to keep them clean and prevent flooding. –Adoption of dust bin to prevent spillage around them. –Composting of flower waste from Nirmalya, ISCKON, Shirdi Temple. –Medical camps for the welfare of waste pickers.

REPESENTATIVE SCENARIO – MSW IN A LOCAL BODY ; 8-10 lacs population 40 TPD of SOLID WASTE COLLECTED DISPOSAL SITES Minimum 5 Hectares of land necessary for Sanitary Engineered Landfills over 20 years Capital cost for developing these will not be less than Rs. 3 crores for 40 Tonnes plus maintenance costs will be an additional Rs. 250 per Tonne TO DISPOSALExisting IS IT A Manageable TASK ? MAJOR ACTIVITY AGREED & CARRIED OUT BY GEETANJALI Survey of the Area for Identifying Dry and Wet Waste Quantity Organize Awareness Drive in the Entire Area for Effective Segregation and Recycling for Dry and Wet waste. Adoption of the Community /Bio Bins and storm water drain for keeping them nuisance free Removal of solid waste from the small storm water drains Processing and Packing of Recyclable Plastic Waste Recovery of Other Recyclable like Paper, Rubber, Leather, Glass etc. Final Transportation of Residue To the Municipal Disposal Sites.

Geetanjali - BTM Plan For Biodegradable Processing Organizing BPL Persons for Door to Door Collection of Biodegradable & Recyclable waste in two bins Providing Bins, Equipment, Protective and facilities to the workers Processing of the Biodegradable waste by use of BTM ( micro- ganism Culture) in Pots, in concrete bins specially Designed or in windrows within 15-20 days cycle to stabilise it. The use of BTM eliminates foul odour, nuisance due to flies and mosquitoes ; this was recently used in Mumbai after flood to eliminate such nuisance.

Door to Door Collection, Transportation and Processing of Biodegradable Waste Decentralized Processing Facility; Portable Bins of 50-100 kgs per day ; processing cycle time 15-20 days House Holds Airport kitchens Railway Station stalls Restaurants Hotel

BENEFITS TO THE SOCIETY & MUNICIPALITY The municipal corporation will achieve separation of recyclable waste at source and collection and transportation of dry waste in disposal site. More over the corporation will also get rid of the waste component reaching disposal site and save proportionate land at the disposal site. The area will also be able to achieve one time use of the pet bottles getting rid of its reuse for packing carrying duplicate branded water & soft drinks. The open drains in the area will be free of clogging.
16
Services of GEETANJALI ENVIRONMENT IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY Consultancy can be provided for the followings: Awareness programme for the stake holders Training to the NGO and BPL workers for Door to Door Collection, community bin adoption & maintenance and removing of garbage from small drains. Establishing the facility for processing Biodegradable and Recyclable for a service provider / NGO selected by the ULB Buying of the end product if quality product adhering to the standards desired at reasonable price Consultancy charges to be decided on concrete proposal
17
IMPACT ON HUMAN HEALTH DURING THE PROCESS OF RECYCLING OF DRY & WET WASTE Positive Health Impacts: Collection of waste in time. Proper selection of bins. Proper technology is adopted. Use of Bio culture to prevent bad odour. Prevent breeding of mosquitoes &flies. Making living earth eco-friendly.
