4 GETTING TO YES The Bradley Beach Public Library is a small library at the Shore Last year, we ran 528 programs; 249 were for kids Reach out to children and families through the school and community Bradley Beach Elementary School has 322 students in grades pre-k through 8 Many of the students come from homes where English is not the primary language More than half the students are eligible for subsidized lunch

5 EXAMPLES Programs at the Library for specific grades: Ramona Quimby, genre scavenger hunt Kids in Gifted and Talented Program take our Historic Walk Annual Essay on Art After-school program once a week In summer, school ESL program moves to library to promote family literacy

7 FOSTERING MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL RELATIONSHIPS The South River Public Library is a small library in Central New Jersey serving its local community and neighbors in Middlesex County. We have a public elementary, middle, and high school, as well as, an adult school. Turning Point Moment: An invaluable relationship developed between an invested school employee and myself. –We currently work together to support each other’s endeavors and cross promote events. Takeaway: One great connection is all you need!

8 EXAMPLES Textbook Collaboration Partnered with district curriculum supervisors Most school textbooks are now available in the library Summer Reading Individualized classroom presentations Working towards providing every book for each child Lego Club Math and science skills development ESL Conversation Club A group that supports that ESL class at the Adult School Since it began, we were invited to present library resources there In turn, we promote Adult School programs in our library Showcase School Talent High school student art display for National Library Week 2015

10 FLEXIBILITY The Pennsauken Free Public Library is a municipal library located between the cities of Camden and Cherry Hill One full time librarian and one full time library assistant serve about 8,000 children under the age of 18. There is one librarian serving approximately 1500 students in grades 9-12, one librarian serving 1600 students in grades 5-8, and one librarian serving seven elementary schools Partnerships needed to happen where and when opportunities arose Other than the collaboration with the High School, the second biggest and regularly occurring initiative was the Librarian’s attendance at Kindergarten registration One key focus was getting people library cards – which the library required for computer use as well as material check out

11 EXAMPLES Went to the High School’s Back to School Night to register people for library cards Held monthly book club sponsored by Pennsauken Free Public Library and Pennsauken High School -- book purchase was made by whichever Librarian had funds available Participated in Book Fair Events at Middle/Intermediate School and at District-wide Literacy night Bridget conducted a story hour during the Library’s book sale weekend Bridget verified student residency on card applications

13 LAKEWOOD TOGETHER A program designed to build a strong, lasting partnership between the students and teachers of GCU School of Education, the Lakewood School District and the parents of Lakewood students. Georgian Court is a small, liberal arts university The population of Lakewood is: –55% Orthodox Jewish (children attend Hebrew schools) –29% Hispanic (many immigrants, non-English speaking) –11% African –American –5% Caucasian

14 EXAMPLES March 2014, 60 sixth-grade honor students, two teachers and the school librarian spent the day at GCU. –The students: conducted research in a university library, evaluated resources on a given topic and experienced a day on a university campus This year, students are working on the Common Core topic of sustainability and the possibility of establishing a school garden. –The students will return to GCU to research community gardens, hear from GCU’s Director of Sustainability, and work in GCU’s Mercy Garden
