What Is a Professional Certification? Professional certification is a voluntary act by a professional body or association. It establishes a system to grant recognition to professionals who have met certification standards. Certified individuals may publicize their credentials by using initials after their names. Certified Professional Accountants use the CPA, for example.

CPLP Certification Requirements (Steps) Step 1: Meet Eligibility and Readiness Requirements Step 2: Take / Pass the Knowledge Exam Step 3: Prepare / Submit a Successful Work Product

Step 1-Eligibility You are eligible to apply for Certification if you are: – A Professional in the learning and performance field and – Have a minimum of three years related work experience Five or more years of related experience is recommended.

Step 1-Application Fee includes: – Candidate Bulletin – Sample Test – Knowledge Exam Seat – Knowledge Exam Score Report – Work Product Score Report (must pass knowledge exam) – CPLP Certificate (must pass knowledge exam & work product)

Step 1-Application Fee does NOT include: – Optional Study Materials ASTD Learning System – $480 for nat’l members, $640 for nonmembers – Study Group Support – Travel expenses to & from testing site – Transfers, retesting fees

Step 2-Knowledge Exam Approximately 3 hours in length Proctored at local testing center 150 Multiple Choice Questions-Each worth 1 point Focus is on breadth of knowledge Certain Areas of Expertise weighted more than others

Step 3-Work Product Submission Must receive a passing score on Knowledge Exam Sample of your past work in one of these AOEs – Designing Learning – Delivering Training – Measuring & Evaluating – Managing the Learning Function – Improving Human Performance – Managing Organizational Change Documents actual work you did

Step 3-Work Product Submission Submission must consist of following components: – Plans Organizational needs & requirements, assessment data and analysis – Outputs What you actually designed, delivered or measured & evaluated – Outcomes What the results of your implementation were Submission includes 8 essay questions and 2 “Challenge” questions

Step 3-Work Product Submission Submission must be turned in approximately 8-12 weeks following the Knowledge Exam Blind Submission Reviewed and scored by ASTD volunteer teams who are professionals in field
