Perception Consider the letter “K.” Is “K” more likely to appear in the l st or 3 rd position of words in the English language? Estimate the proportion of English words that begin with the letter “K” versus words that have a “K” in the third position. ANSWER: There are three times as many words that have a “K” in the third position as those that begin with “K”.

Which of the following sequences of six tosses of a fair coin is more likely (where H denotes “heads” and T “tails”)? H T H T T H or H H H H H H. Answer: Both sequences are equally probable

Imagine that the U.S. is preparing for the outbreak of an unusual disease which is expected to kill 600 people. Two alternative programs to combat the disease have been proposed. Assuming that the exact scientific estimate of the consequences of the programs is as follows, which of the programs would you favor? If Program A is adopted, 200 people will be saved. If Program B is adopted, there is a 1/3 probability that 600 people will be saved, and 2/3 probability that no people will be saved.

Assuming that the exact scientific estimate of the consequences of the programs is as follows, which of the programs would you favor? If Program C is adopted, 400 people will die If Program D is adopted, there is a 1/3 probability that nobody will die, and a 2/3 probability that 600 people will die

A panel of psychologist has interviewed and administered personality tests to 30 engineers and 70 lawyers. On the basis of this information, thumbnail descriptions of the 30 engineers and 70 lawyers have been written. Below is a description of one of them, chosen at random, from the 100 available descriptions. What is the probability that the person described is an engineer? Jack is a 45-year-old man. He is married and has four children. He is generally conservative, careful, and ambitious. He shows no interest in political or social issues, and he spends most of his free time on home carpentry, sailing, and mathematical puzzles.

A certain town is served by two small hospitals. In the larger hospital, about 45 babies are born each day, and in the smaller hospital, about 15 babies are born each day. As you know, about 50% of all babies are boys. However, the exact percentage varies from day to day. Sometimes it may be higher than 50%. Sometimes lower. For a period of one year, each hospital recorded the days on which more than 60% of the babies born were boys. Which hospital do you think recorded more such days? A the larger hospital B the smaller hospital C about the same (that is, within 5% of each other)
