Lesson 1 The Middle Atlantic Colonies
Not long after the Pilgrims, other Europeans began settling the Mid-Atlantic. Henry Hudson was the first to explore this region. - he sailed on the ‘Half Moon’ and explored the entire Mid-Atl. Coast. - he wrote about all the deep bays and natural resources, which caused many more countries want to settle here.

Create a Timeline! Continue reading with your group on page 127. Copy and complete the blank timeline below with important dates and details about what happened. I’ve done the first one for you! 1609 1625 1664 1682 Henry Hudson explores the Mid-Atl. Region and writes about all the deep bays and resources. Dutch begin New Amsterdam, where they accept all who come. They trade with N.A. that live in their area. England takes control of the Dutch, and split the land into two: New York and New Jersey. New Amsterdam becomes New York City. William Penn founds Pennsylvania where they welcomed everyone. Penn has a peace treaty with the N.A. in the area

Important Words! Confederation- a loosely united group of governments working together. Treaty- an agreement between two countries or groups of people.

A Time of Growth (p.129) Many more people came to this region because of… Religious freedom, fertile soil, trade and good jobs. Cities grew where there were ports a trading center where ships can load and unload goods safely.

Ports Some major ports that grew were…
-Trenton, Philadelphia, New York City, Dover and Wilmington Philadelphia became the busiest port city in the region! Many skilled workers came to the region - carpenters, bakers, tailors, blacksmiths, printers.

Ben Franklin Moved from Boston to Philadelphia when he was 17! (he actually ran away!) -he opened his own printing business and more… -first volunteer fire company, first hospital and first public library. -He also became a very important political leader! Generation- the average time between the birth of parents and the birth of their children.

A New Nation Up until the 1760s, the British controlled most of the land in the New World with no problems. However, during the 1760s, Britain passed several laws that made it more difficult for the colonists to trade and make money. They also made several new taxes that the colonists did not agree to…

A New Nation The new laws and taxes made the colonists very angry!
-Stamp Act of 1765: said that any item traded or bought in the colonies, needed to have a British Stamp on it, which cost extra money. -they began to shout, “NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!” Representation- to have someone to make decisions and speak for you in a government.

A New Nation The colonists began to protest, or speak out, against the new taxes. Others refused to buy British goods, which is called a boycott. The colonists wanted Independence from Britain, or the freedom to govern themselves.

A New Nation In 1775, A Declaration of Independence was created and sent to England… -it said that all people deserved life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Later in 1775, fighting began between the British and American colonists…this was the start of the American revolution. A large, sudden change in government or people’s lives.

A New Nation Some colonists didn’t want independence from Britain, they were called Loyalists, because they were loyal to the King. Colonists that wanted independence, were called Patriots. After 8 years of fighting, the Americans finally defeated the British and gained their Independence.

The Treaty of Paris In 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed = ended the war and gave more land to the colonists. U.S. gained all the land east of the Mississippi River.
