Printing: Your printer might not print the same way our printers do, so make sure to try a couple of test prints. If things aren’t aligning quite right, experiment with the Scale to Fit Paper setting. It’s located in the Print dialog – just click Full Page Slides to get to it. And did you notice we made fold marks for you? They are really light, but if you don’t like them showing on your brochure, click View, Slide Master, and delete them before you print. Customizing the Content: If you need more placeholders for titles, subtitles or body text, just make a copy of what you need and drag it into place. PowerPoint’s Smart Guides will help you align it with everything else. By the way, if you need to move or copy the red lines, you can select them by clicking the dotted outlines. Mathematics Math is taught through whole group instruction, small group reinforcement, and cooperative learning groups. Students are encouraged to make connections between math concepts and real- world applications. The Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards may include a variety of learning strategies that may be unfamiliar to you. These strategies are rigorous and challenge students to gain a deeper understanding of concepts. Daily math homework will be given that covers previous or new skills. The Learn Zillion website includes concise video tutorials on all concepts and strategies and are great for homework help! www.learnzillion.comwww.learnzillion.com This year your child will be placed in a math class to help meet his/her individual needs. Language Arts We are excited to begin using the new district adopted “Journeys” series. This textbook adoption is correlated to the Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards. Students will be reading a variety of text from the anthology as well as trade books. The district has also selected “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” as the 5 th grade exemplar text. This great story will be the focus of a literature study later in the year. 5 th graders will be expected to read daily. We will use the Accelerated Reader (AR) program. More information will be given by your child’s teacher. Students will be expected to read for a minimum of 20 minutes each night and respond to what they read in a journal. They will learn how to complete this task the first week of school. Spelling words will be assigned weekly and will be assessed within the students’ writing activities and from weekly tests. Spelling homework, which includes several activities, is assigned on Monday and due Friday. Students will also be tested on Friday. We will use www.spellingcity.com for extra support.www.spellingcity.com Social Studies 5 th graders will be using the Harcourt “The United States: Making a New Nation” text to study the early history of our country. JA BizTown is a simulated city in which students will be hired for a job and work for the day. This is an amazing experience for our students as they learn firsthand about economics and civics. We will attend in September. Science We will use the Harcourt text “Science” to study Life Science (structure and function of living things), Physical Science (matter, forces and motion), Earth and Space Science (solar system), and how science and technology affect our lives. Students will learn the inquiry process and implement it with a science project during the school science fair.
