1 Entitlements Inquiry Children and young people tell us they don’t always get what they are supposed to get by law (entitlements) Sometimes they don’t know what they are entitled to I didn’t know I was supposed to get money for going to university Sometimes, my local authority hasn’t given me what I’m entitled to until I complained and got help from an advocate. Before I came to the Children in Care Council I didn’t know loads of things I know now

2 So what do you want to know from me?

3 You are experts! We need your help to find out: If you know about your entitlements If you get them Your ideas for how all children and young people can find out about their entitlements

4 What do you do with what we tell you? We want to tell people in power, like MP’s and Lords, what you tell us. We promise: Not tell anyone your name / area if you don’t want us to To tell others about things your area does well to help children and young people know their entitlements To get you details of an advocate in your area if you need help to get what you are supposed to

6 You must have a care plan that says what your needs are now, what will be done to meet those needs and what your plans are for the future. Left for Law Right for Lie Looked after children

7 Your care plan must include your views and when deciding what to do, people must take your views into consideration. Looked after children

8 When a social worker visits you, they have to speak to you alone, whether you want them to or not. Looked after children

9 When an important decision is made about you, for example moving house, a review meeting has to happen (unless it is an emergency). Looked after children

10 If you are aged 16 – 19 and in full time education, you should get £1,200 paid in cash to you.

11 The Government thinks that local authorities should provide a setting up home grant of £1,000 Left for Law Right for Lie Care leavers

12 Your local authority must provide you with help with costs of being in education or training up until you are 21 (or 25 if you’re still in education). Care leavers

13 Your local authority must provide you with help with the costs of getting and keeping a job (up until the age of 21 if you are in education, employment or training). Care leavers

14 Your personal advisor does not have to show you a copy of your assessment and Pathway Plan Care leavers

15 If you’re in higher education, you are responsible for finding somewhere to stay during the holidays. Care leavers
