Agenda: Ch. 9 Lesson Objective: The student will be able to
Define the word parts related to the urinary system. Understand terms related to the diagnostic procedures and urine/urination disorders of the urinary system. Lesson: The Urinary System Ch. 9 Quiz on Monday, Apr 28th (B-day)/Tuesday, Apr 29th (A-day)
4
Primary Structures of the Urinary System
5
Kidneys Nephr/o or Ren/o Filter the blood to remove waste products.
Maintain electrolyte balance Remove excess water to maintain the fluid volume
6
Glomerulus Glomerul/o
Filtering unit of the kidneys through a system of capillaries
7
Glomerulus- A Closer Look
8
Urine Ur/o, Urin/o Liquid waste product (urea) produced by the kidney that is to be excreted. -uria urine/urination
9
Renal Pelvis Pyel/o Collects urine produced by the kidney.
10
Ureters Ureter/o Transport urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
11
Urinary Bladder Cyst/o Stores urine until it is excreted.
12
Urethra Urethr/o Transports urine from the bladder to be excreted from the body.
13
Medical Specialties Nephrologist Urologist
Nephrologist, specialist in diseases/disorders of the kidneys Urologist, specialist in diseases/disorders of the urinary system in females and the genitourinary system in males

Diagnostic Procedures
Visual Examination of the bladder Cystoscopy Catheterization the insertion of a tube into the bladder through the urethra to remove urine Intravenous Pyelogram Voiding Cystourethrography Catheterization, the insertion of a tube into the bladder through the urethra to remove urine Cystoscopy, visual examination of the bladder Intravenous Pyelogram, picture or record of the kidney(s) and ureter(s) using IV contrast Voiding Cystourethrography, process of recording or producing a picture/record of the flow of urine from the bladder to the urethra
16
Diagnostic Procedures-Catheterization
17
Urine/Urination Diuresis- increased output in urination
Enuresis- involuntary urination Incontinence- inability to control the excretion of urine or feces
18
Urine/Urination Nightime urination Difficult/bad urination
Nocturia Difficult/bad urination Dysuria Without urination Anuria Scanty urination Oliguria Many (frequent) urination Polyuria Blood in urine Hematuria Pus in urine Pyuria Urination of excessive protein Hyperproteinuria Blood condition of decreased/deficient protein Hypoproteinemia Nocturia, nighttime urination Dysuria, difficult/bad/painful urination Anuria, without urination Oliguria, scanty urination Polyuria, many (frequent) urination Hematuria, blood in urine Pyuria, pus in urine Hyperproteinuria, urination of excessive protein Hypoproteinemia, blood condition of decreased/deficient protein
19
Stones- Hint: Use the suffix “-lith” for the 1st 3
Kidney stone Nephrolith Ureter stone Ureterolith Bladder stone Cystolith Surgical incision for the removal of a stone Lithotomy To crush a stone using external shockwaves Lithotripsy

What is the medical term?
Taylor is on the track team at school. After just having run a mile on a very hot day, Taylor goes to the bathroom to urinate, and is concerned that there is a very scanty amount and the color is deep amber. After a few days there, she begins to have painful when she urinates, and notices that her urine smells funny and is cloudy.
22
The Kidneys Any disease of the kidney Stretching of the kidney
Nephropathy Stretching of the kidney Nephrectasis Inflammation of the kidney Nephritis Inflammation of the glomeruli of the kidney Glomerulonephritis Prolapse of a kidney Nephroptosis Surgical fixation of kidney Nephropexy Abnormal condition of kidney pus (suppuration) Nephropyosis
23
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)/Renal Failure
Inability of the kidneys to function (filter); may be the result of other kidney diseases Dialysis procedure that removes waste products from the blood of a patient whose kidneys no longer function
24
Dialysis- Hemodialysis (HD)
Hemodialysis, process by which waste products are directly filtered from blood Diet:
25
Dialysis- Peritoneal Dialysis (PD)
Life on HD or PD Peritoneal Dialysis, process by which waste products are filtered out and drained from the peritoneal cavity
26
Other Kidney Treatments
Freeing/loosening of a kidney from adhesions Nephrolysis Surgical creation of an opening from the kidney Nephrostomy Surgical repair of the pelvis Pyeloplasty Surgical incision into the renal pelvis Pyelotomy
27
The Ureters Stretching of a ureter Bleeding of the ureter
Ureterectasis Bleeding of the ureter Ureterorrhagia Surgical removal of a ureter Ureterectomy Surgical repair of a ureter Ureteroplasty Surgical suturing of a ureter Ureterorrhaphy
28
The Urinary Bladder Inflammation of the bladder Hernia of the bladder
Cystitis Hernia of the bladder Cystocele Surgical fixation of the bladder Cystopexy Surgical suturing of the bladder Cystorrhaphy Surgical removal of all or part of the bladder Cystectomy
29
Cystocele
