Digital literacy HANA MORAOVA

Outline  What is CALL and MALL  Reasons for application of MALL  21 st century skills  PISA and information literacy  Situation in your country  What should teachers consider  Means of creating interactive lessons - overview

What is “CALL”?  M. Warschauer (2009): Computer-assisted language learning is a process of acquiring and teaching strategies enhanced by, or based on, the computer technology during interactive lessons of second language.

What is “MALL”  MALL (Mobile-assisted language learning)  Mobile phones, laptops, PDAs, MP3 players

Reasons for Application of CALL  Motivation of teachers  Motivation of students  New context and dimension of a classroom  Cross-curricular relations

21 st Century Skills  Shift in advanced economies from manufacturing to emphasizing information and knowledge service s  holistic education, fast-changing and highly-connected world  Learning to collaborate with others and connect through technology are essential skills in a knowledge-based economy.  Success lies in being able to communicate, share, and use information to solve complex problems, in being able to adapt and innovate in response to new demands and changing circumstances, in being able to marshal and expand the power of technology to create new knowledge and expand human capacity and productivity

4 categories of 21 st century skills  Ways of thinking. Creativity, critical thinking, problem- solving, decision-making and learning, metacognition  Ways of working. Communication and collaboration  Tools for working. Information and communications technology (ICT) and information literacy  Skills for living in the world. Citizenship, life and career, and personal and social responsibility, cultural awareness

PISA framework  Computers are now so commonly used in the workplace and in everyday life. A level of competency in mathematical literacy in the 21st century includes usage of computers (Hoyles et al., 2002). Computers now touch the lives of individuals around the world as they engage in their personal, societal, occupational and scientific endeavours. They offer tools for – among other things – computation, representation, visualisation, modification, exploration and experimentation on, of and with a large variety of mathematical objects, phenomena and processes. The definition of mathematical literacy for PISA 2012 recognises the important role of computer-based tools by noting that mathematically literate individuals are expected to use these in their endeavours to describe, explain, and predict phenomena. In this definition, the word “tool” refers to calculators and computers, as well as to other physical objects such as rulers and protractors used for measuring and construction. A second consideration is that the computer provides a range of opportunities for designers to write test items that are more interactive, authentic and engaging (Stacey and Wiliam, forthcoming).  OECD (2013), PISA 2012 Assessment and Analytical Framework: Mathematics, Reading, Science, Problem Solving and Financial Literacy, OECD Publishing
