4 Problems  Trouble with officer transitions after original officers left/graduated  Large decrease in speakers invited, events, etc  2007-2008  Mainly an organizational issue

5 A new start!  All new officers this year  Ambitious plans to revitalize the organization  Increase number of speakers per term  Find regular volunteer activities to engage members  Recruit/retain active members (especially freshmen)

6 Current projects  Speakers  Professor Richard Nelson: biodiesel  Professor Sossina Haile: fuel cells  Professor Adlai Wertman: social entrepreneurship

7 Current projects  Volunteer projects  Solar Cup: John Muir HS  Biodiesel Club: Seth John  Solar Decathlon

8 Current projects  Solar Cup  Solar-powered canoe (with batteries)  Endurance and sprint races  High school competition in SoCal

9 Current projects  Biodiesel Club  Working reactor: biodiesel produced already  Used vegetable oil from Chandler  Some technical/legal issues  Test purity: gas chromatography-mass spectrometry  Certification?  Campus fleet

10 Current projects  Solar Decathlon  Build an attractive, efficient, solar-powered house  Zero net metering (does not draw off the grid)  Solar-powered (off-the-shelf panels)  20 university teams  Competition on the Mall every two years for 3 weeks  Proposal decision: December 11 th

12 Solar Decathlon 2011  Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc)  Known for innovative/daring designs  Full support of their faculty and administration  Project/design classes in support  Caltech  Support of our president and faculty  Organizing project classes for students
