55 Trend In The Number Of Full-Time-Equivalent Registered Nurses Ages 23–26, 1973–2009. Auerbach D I et al. Health Aff 2011;30:2286-2292 ©2011 by Project HOPE - The People-to-People Health Foundation, Inc. NURSING: OVERSUPPLY?

56 56 All of the scenarios presented in the most recent report of the Center for Health Workforce Studies demonstrated that even if the supply of nurses in Washington increases by 10%, of current output, RN supply to fall short of demand by 2017 or earlier. Short-term (five-year) RN supply appears to align with demand, but demand is estimated to begin to outpace supply in Washington over the next decade as RNs begin to retire and demand for health care escalates. A complicating factor is that the recent surge of registered nurses into the workforce because of the recession has made it harder for young RNs to find jobs. This phenomenon may in fact discourage some from entering the profession, although it is unclear whether it will do so and whether the trend will continue. It is also unclear to what extent federal and state support for nursing education is key to continued program and enrollment growth. doi: Health Aff SOURCE: WASHINGTON CENTER FOR NURSING Policy Brief December 2011 Washington State Registered Nurse Supply and Demand Projections: 2011-2031 Skillman Andrilla Tieman and McCook
