5. What is Rehabilitation? The development or restoration of a person to their fullest physical, psychological, social, vocational and educational potential consistent with his or her physiological or anatomic impairment and environmental limitations. In other words….. “putting the pieces back together “ !!

6. How did PM&R originate? The roots of PM&R date back to the use of physical agents such as the sun’s heat and hot springs for medicinal purposes in early recorded history. The field began in earnest in the 1930s.

7. More on the origin……. After WW II, as thousands of veterans came home with serious disabilities, the task of helping to restore them to productive lives became a new focus for the field. The Advisory Board of Medical Specialties granted PM&R its approval as a specialty of medicine in 1947.

8. What is the goal of PM&R? Work to obtain OPTIMAL FUNCTION and improved QUALITY OF LIFE !!! Emphasizes the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders involving the neuromusculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems
