5. Analysis Catherine is motivated by social ambition to marry Edgar Linton, the greatest man in the neighborhood. She marries him knowing that she does not love him, and that her heart and soul will always belong to her true love, Heathcliff. She says, “I am Heathcliff,” as opposed to saying, “I love Heathcliff,” expressing the belief that they have become a single unity, such as frost and fire.

7. Analysis Lago explains that he does not follow Othello because it is his duty or because he loves him, but rather since he suspects that Othello is sleeping with his wife. It is crucial for Lago’s revenge to not demonstrate his inward feeling because it will give him away. Lago believes that expressing oneself outwardly is foolish. I am not what I am. Lago is saying that he does not express his inner feeling outwardly, rather he pretends to be close to Othello so he can strike at him I am not what I am. 9. Analysis Roger and some of the older boys begin to terrorize the littluns, the first step from civilization to savagery. This quote shows us that Roger still has the vestiges of society in him and feels constrained by the institutions that enforce the morality of society. Even though the taboo is invisible, the power that it holds on the actions of the boys is immense. It is what separates savagery and civilization, a major theme in the novel.
