 Pick up 2 sheets in the front  Pick up Calc  DO NOW IS THE VENN DIAGRAM DO NOW DUE NOW Thursday, August 29, 2013  Speed & Velocity Worksheet  HAVE YOUR HOMEWORK OUT AND PLACED ON YOUR TABLE SO I CAN EASILY COME CHECK AND SEE IF YOU HAVE IT

Distance vs. Displacement  Distance = total length traveled  Displacement = change in position Distance TOTAL LENGTH Used to calculate speed Always positive Displacement Difference between where the object started and where it ended Used to calculate velocity Can be positive or negative Both mea- sured in m, km, mi, cm, in

Speed vs. Velocity  Speed = how fast an object is going  Velocity = how fast an object is going in a certain direction Speed Uses distance Scalar Always positive Velocity Uses displacement Vector Can be positive or negative Measure how fast Measured in m/s, km/min, mph

Equation Review v = d t ∙ v = d t = d ___ v ___ v ___ v ___ t x t t x Solving for SPEED/VELOCITY Solving for DISTANCE/DISPLACEMENT Solving for TIME

Announcements  Reading Quizzes are graded The last two questions (which were over questions #16-20) were graded for “effort.” There was a lot of confusion over answers, so basically if I knew you did the questions I gave you credit.  You will get back your homework tomorrow (?) most likely, and I will have a key so we can correct it together  Our quiz over linear motion will be Tuesday September10 th  Make up Quizzes Math Quiz Thaddeus & Jaron (today after school) Same’tria (next week) & Destiney & Jessica R. Reading Quiz Arnoldo (next Tuesday) Lauren & Jesus (both next Tuesday) Abby & Stephany (both next Tuesday)

Thursday, 8/29/13 TEKS: P.4A Generate and interpret graphs and charts describing different types of motion including the use of real-time technology such as motion detectors or photo-gates By the end of today SWBAT: Interpret a position vs. time graph Essential Question: What is a position vs. time graph? Topic: Position vs. Time Graphs

Update Your Unit Cover Sheet! Table of Contents Date Assignment 9/10/12Intro to Linear Motion C-Notes 9/11/12Variable Manipulation C-Notes 9/12/12 9/17/12 9/20/12 Acceleration C-Notes Velocity and Acceleration Graphic Organizer Position vs. Time C-Notes

Position vs. Time Graphs What is in a position vs. time graph?  X-axis: time (s) that the object is in motion  Y-axis: position (m) of the object in motion SLOPE of the line = velocity!

How to Find Slope  Slope = rise = Δy run Δx = How much your position is changing How much your time is changing

2040 Position vs. Time B A D

 What is the velocity between t = 0 and t = 4? Slope = Δy/Δx Slope = 20m/4 s = 5 m/s

 What is the velocity between t =4 and t = 6? Slope = Δy/Δx Slope = 0m/2 s = 0 m/s When an object is at rest, its velocity = 0 so slope = 0

 What is the velocity between t = 6 and t = 8? Slope = Δy/Δx Slope = 20m/2 s = 10 m/s

 What is the velocity between t = 8 and t = 12? Slope = Δy/Δx Slope = -20m/4 s = -5 m/s Negative velocity means…? YOU’RE GOING BACKWARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2040 The steeper the line, the higher the velocity = faster the object is moving

Work it Out!  Work with your elbow partner to answer the questions on the back of your C-Notes  Raise your hand if you need help  EXPECTATIONS  Level 1 Voices  Physics Focused

Look at the graph. It shows how 3 runners ran a 100-meter race. 1.Which runner won the race? 2.Which runner stopped for a rest? 3.How long did he stop to rest? 4.How long did Ronaldo take to complete the race? 5.What is Chicharito’s average speed? 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 Chicharito Ronaldo Beckham Time (s) Position (m)
