What Is an Acute Injury?? An Acute Injury is a sudden movement of muscle or ligament that causes an injury. EX. A sudden……… Ankle Sprain Back Strain Fracture
3
Signs of an Acute Injury Sudden, severe pain Swelling Limited Range of Motion Pressure applied causes pain Extreme weakness of the structure Heat due to an increase of blood flow A bone or joint visible or out of place * Note: these can occur suddenly during any physical activity.
4
R.I.C.E. Treatment
5
R.I.C.E. Treatment Cont. R : est is key to prevent further injury. It is also important because your body needs to conserve energy to have time to properly heal. I : ce is used to limit blood flow, reduce swelling and decrease pain *REMEMBER: Never leave ice directly on the skin for more than 20mins. This may result in tissue damage.
6
R.I.C.E. Treatment Cont. C :ompression aids in the healing process by reducing swelling. E: levation ensures the blood is circulating correctly so no blood clots form and also helps in reducing swelling.
7
Tissue Healing Tissue healing goes through 3 stages: Inflammatory Response Matrix and Cell Proliferation Remodeling
8
Stage 1 Inflammatory Response- Lasts from time of injury to 72 hours Signs and Symptoms: Severe Pain Severe Swelling Warm to touch Severe Bruising Weakness of the structure
9
Stage 2 Matrix and Cell Proliferation: Lasts from 72 hours to 2-3 weeks Signs and Symptoms: Mild/Moderate Swelling Bruising Pain Weakness of the structure
10
Stage 3 Remodeling: Lasts from 2-3 weeks until 3-4 months Signs and Symptoms Minimum/ No Swelling Bruising Pain Weakness of the structure
