REQUIRED MATERIALS Mead 3-subject college-ruled notebook with pocket dividers Glue stick Tape (double-sided or regular) Colored pencils Highlighters

FORMAT RIGHT SIDE Right = “Restricted” for teacher materials Date Lesson Title Daily Lesson Objective Notes from class, group, discussion, lecture Teacher-assigned questions and assignments Literary terms Notes from reading

FORMAT LEFT SIDE Left = “Learning” side – your interaction Create visual representations Summarize the daily lesson Write about characters, themes, and settings Complete writing assignments that allow you to analyze literary works and explore your thoughts and values regarding controversial issues

GUIDELINES (for full credit) COVER: must include student name, course title, class period, teacher name, and at least three color pictures or illustrations on literary themes TABLE OF CONTENTS: leave five pages blank in the beginning of your notebook – start numbering pages after the table of contents PAGE NUMBERS: number every page in advance (right side ONLY), on the top right corner – do not rip out pages for ANY reason UNIT OVERVIEW PAGES: each time we begin a new unit, leave a blank page (left + right).. At the conclusion of each unit, go back and decorate the overview pages with a clever title, the essential questions and “big picture” theme that reflects, summarizes, or represents the ideas in that unit TITLES: at the top of each day’s “right-side” notes, leave space for a title, date, and lesson objective … the title will also be added to your ongoing table of contents with the corresponding date and page number

DIVIDER POCKETS used for storage POCKET #1 – all general handouts for the course, including this packet; all returned notebook evaluations and rubrics POCKET #2 – all returned tests and quizzes POCKET #3 – all writing assignments completed outside the notebook

POSSIBLE LEFT-SIDE ACTIVITIES SUMMARY – succinct, one-paragraph summary of your notes as a closure homework assignment Pictowords and pictograms Venn Diagrams Cartoons Posters, Advertisements, Brochures, etc. Concept Maps Poetry or Song Lyrics Dialogues Mnemonic Devices or Memory Aids Editorials “Report Cards” Personal Response (express an idea, ask a question, explore your feelings, or reflect on how topics touch your life) Here I Stand (state conclusions you draw, personal position, insights on topic) Quotes and their significance explained in a one-paragraph response Diary or Journal Entries
