CONVERTING FROM SCIENTIFIC NOTATION TO STANDARD FORM
12
Positive Exponents Positive Exponent – If the scientific notation has a positive exponent move the decimal the # of spaces of the exponent to the RIGHTPositive Exponent – If the scientific notation has a positive exponent move the decimal the # of spaces of the exponent to the RIGHT Example: 5.34 x 10 4Example: 5.34 x 10 4 Starting at the decimal point move it 4 spaces to the RIGHT 5.3400 = 53,400
13
Negative Exponents Negative Exponent – If the scientific notation has a negative exponent, move the decimal the # of spaces of the exponent to the LEFTNegative Exponent – If the scientific notation has a negative exponent, move the decimal the # of spaces of the exponent to the LEFT Example: 3.27 x 10 -3Example: 3.27 x 10 -3 Starting at the decimal point move it 4 spaces to the LEFT 003.27 =.00327

Positive Exponent 3,725,000 1. Place a decimal point between 3 & 7 2.Count the number digits from the decimal to the end of the number going right 3. Drop all zeros in the number and write as a power of 10 3,725,000 = 3.725 x 10 6
18
Negative Exponent 0.000316 2. Place the decimal between the 3 & 1 3. Count the number of digits from the original decimal to the new decimal place 4. Restate the number as a power of 10 0.000316 = 3.16 x 10 -4 1. If the standard form number is less than 1 you will have a negative exponent.
